Claes Van Beresteyn
Claes van Beresteyn (1627–1684), was a Dutch Golden Age landscape painter who founded a hofje in his hometown of Haarlem. Biography He was born in Haarlem as the youngest of 6 children of the lawyer Paulus van Beresteyn and his third wife Catharina van der Eem.Nieuw Nederlandsch Biografisch Woordenboek, part 10, page 41 His portrait as a child was added to the family portrait in a long swathe of canvas on the right hand side. This canvas was later sold in the 19th century to the Louvre as a Frans Hals painting, though later analysis by art historians have since disputed its attribution to Pieter Soutman. On 5 January 1644 he became a member of the Haarlem Guild of St. Luke as a pupil of Salomon de Bray and became an etcher and landscape painter in the manner of Cornelis Vroom and Adriaen Hendriksz Verboom. Dutch Golden Age painting is the painting of the Dutch Golden Age, a period in Dutch history roughly spanning the 17th century, during and after the later part of the Eighty Years' War (1568–1648) for Dutch independence. The new Dutch Republic was the most prosperous nation in Europe and led European trade, science, and art. The northern Netherlandish provinces that made up the new state had traditionally been less important artistic centres than cities in Flanders in the south. The upheavals and large-scale transfers of population of the war, and the sharp break with the old monarchist and Catholic cultural traditions, meant that Dutch art had to reinvent itself almost entirely, a task in which it was very largely successful. Cuyperstraat, which is named for the architect who designed the Cathedral of Saint Bavo next door, Joseph Cuypers. This hofje is the wealthiest hofje foundation in Haarlem with the most modern facilities for its inhabitants. Poor (devote) Catholic women of Haarlem 60 years and older are still welcome to live there for free. History of the Hofje van Codde The modern-day Hofje van Codde en Berestijn was built in 1968 on land next to the Cathedral of Saint Bavo, because the original donator, Pieter Jansz Codde, was Catholic and built his hofje next to the former cathedral in Haarlem, the Sint-Bavokerk on the Grote markt in the center of town. This location is the second move that the hofje made in its history spanning four centuries. A hofje provided housing for elderly people (mostly women). They were privately funded, and served as a form of social security. In the Netherlands there are still a number of hofjes in use. Hofjes are usually built in a U-shape with a yard or garden in the middle, and a gate as entrance. The shape of hofjes was most likely inspired by the (older) Begijnenhofjes—groups of small houses inhabited exclusively by religious women. A distinction is usually made between the Begijnenhofjes and 'regular' hofjes. The former were used only by (Catholic) women, who were supporting themselves. They were a kind of cloister.
