City Of London Market Constabularies
The City of London market constabularies are three small constabularies responsible for security at Billingsgate, New Spitalfields and Smithfield markets run by the City of London Corporation. Powers and duties Market constables now perform a mixture of security and emergency medical work and are no longer recognised as police officers and are not attested as such. However, their uniforms still say "Markets Police" out of tradition and their 'police-type' role. They are responsible for enforcing market bylaws, rules and regulations. They are not expected to get into serious confrontational roles, with more serious related work being handed over to the City of London Police or Metropolitan Police Service. Billingsgate Fish Market is located in Canary Wharf in London. It is the United Kingdom's largest inland fish market. It takes its name from Billingsgate, a ward in the south-east corner of the City of London, where the riverside market was originally established. In its original location in the 19th century, Billingsgate was the largest fish market in the world. New Spitalfields Market is a fruit and vegetable market on a site in Leyton, London Borough of Waltham Forest in East London. The market is owned and administrated by the City of London Corporation. The market is Europe's leading horticultural market specialising in exotic fruit and vegetables - and the largest revenue earning wholesale market in the UK. History It had previously been located at Spitalfields Market just off Bishopsgate, on the east side of the City of London. Due to traffic congestion, lack of space for parking lorries, as well as out of date market buildings (e.g. poor refrigeration facilities) - the market was relocated out of the City in the early 1990s. Smithfield, properly known as West Smithfield, is a district located in Central London, part of Farringdon Without, the most westerly ward of the City of London, England. Smithfield is home to a number of City institutions, such as St Bartholomew's Hospital and livery halls, including those of the Butchers' and Haberdashers' Companies. Birmingham Market Police
Birmingham Market Police is a defunct police force of the United Kingdom which existed between 1883 and 1976, and was formerly under the control of Birmingham Corporation where it was responsible for policing the markets controlled by the corporation. Constables of the market police were attested under section 104 of the Birmingham Corporation (Consolidation) Act 1883 which gave them the same powers and privileges as borough constables appointed under the Municipal Corporations Act 1882, but the part of the 1882 act that related to borough constables had been completely repealed by 1976 and therefore such constables no longer enjoy any powers. In 2016 Birmingham City Council introduced "market enforcement officers", who are "accredited persons" under a Community Safety Accreditation Scheme, giving them the power to issue fixed penalty notices for a variety of low-level offences. Liverpool Markets Police
Liverpool Markets Police was a police force maintained by Liverpool City Council to police the markets owned by the city. The force existed from at least 1837, was disbanded in 1976, re-formed in 1992 and finally disbanded in 2002. History The first recorded market constable was Charles Worral, who was listed as such in 1837, and as "Head Constable" in 1851. In 1860 the market constables had formed into a formal police force under the control of the city's Markets Department, though records of the force are non-existent from then until after World War Two. On 2 May 1946, the chief constable of Liverpool City Police, Herbert Winstanley, was approached for assistance in re-organising market policing.
