Citrus County Sheriff's Office
The Citrus County Sheriff's Office (CCSO) is the primary law enforcement agency servicing a population of 138,143 in of Citrus County, Florida. History The sheriff's office began operations on June 2, 1887, when Citrus County was created with the signature of Governor Edward A. Perry. In 2005, the Citrus County Sheriff's Office made national headlines with its investigation of the gruesome rape and murder of Jessica Lunsford, a 9-year-old Homosassa girl. Organization The current sheriff is Mike Prendergast. The CCSO is divided into two bureaus: The Law Enforcement Bureau oversees the patrol, criminal investigation, and emergency management divisions, and the Administrative Bureau oversees judicial services, staff, finance, human resources (recruiting), and information services, as well as special projects personnel. Citrus County is a county located on the west central coast of the U.S. state of Florida. As of the 2020 census, the population was 153,843. Its county seat is Inverness, and its largest community is Homosassa Springs. Citrus County comprises the Homosassa Springs, Florida Metropolitan Statistical Area. History The area covered by present-day Citrus County is thought to have been first occupied at least 10,000 years ago. About 2,500 years ago, mound-building Native Americans settled in the area and built the complex that now forms the Crystal River Archeological Site. The site was occupied for about 2,000 years. Why the complex was abandoned is currently unknown. Citrus County was created in 1887. The Citrus County area was formerly part of Hernando County. It was named for the county's citrus groves. Murder Of Jessica Lunsford
Jessica Marie Lunsford (October 6, 1995 – February 24, 2005) was an American nine-year-old girl from Homosassa, Florida, who was murdered in February 2005. Lunsford was abducted from her home in the early morning of February 24, 2005, by John Couey, a 46-year-old convicted sex offender who lived nearby. Couey held her captive over the weekend, during which she was raped and later murdered by being buried alive. The media extensively covered the investigation and trial of Couey. Jessica Lunsford's murder influenced the introduction of legislation in Florida known as Jessica's Law, designed to protect potential victims and reduce a sexual offender's ability to re-offend, which has since influenced similar legislation in 42 other states. On August 24, 2007, a judge in Inverness convicted Couey for the kidnapping, sexual battery, and first degree murder of Lunsford, and sentenced him to death. Homosassa
Homosassa is a census-designated place (CDP) in Citrus County, Florida, Citrus County, Florida, United States. The population was 2,578 at the 2010 census. History Homosassa is derived from a Seminole Indian name meaning either "river of fishes" or "pepper ridge". In 1851, David Levy Yulee established a sugar plantation on the Homosassa River, close to the current town of Homosassa. The plantation was worked by approximately 1,000 slaves, but Yulee was an absentee owner, spending most of his time in Fernandina Beach, Florida, Fernandina. Among the crops raised were sugar cane, cotton, and citrus. The Yulee Groves were one of the first in Florida to grow sweet oranges budded from sour orange stock. The mill, which was steam-driven, operated from 1851 to 1864 and produced sugar, syrup, and molasses, the last of which was part of the rum-making process.
