Ciskei International Airways was an airline run and owned by the Bantustan government of the Ciskei in South Africa. The airline ran from June 1987 to January 1989 operating out of Bhisho Airport as its hub. The airline, along with the construction of Bhisho Airport, was funded and run by the Government of South Africa. Bhisho Airport
Bhisho Airport ( af, Bhisho-lughawe; ), also known as Bulembu Airport, is a local airport in Eastern Cape, South Africa, which serves Bhisho and King William's Town. The airport lies on the right side of the N2 national road toward Peddie. The airport was the hub of the short lived Ciskei International Airways from 1986 to 1989. Ciskei
Ciskei (, or ) was a Bantustan for the Xhosa people-located in the southeast of South Africa. It covered an area of , almost entirely surrounded by what was then the Cape Province, and possessed a small coastline along the shore of the Indian Ocean. Under South Africa's policy of apartheid, land was set aside for black peoples in self-governing territories. Ciskei was designated as one of two homelands, or "Bantustans", for Xhosa-speaking people. Xhosa people were forcibly resettled in the Ciskei and Transkei, the other Xhosa homeland. The Convair 990 Coronado is an American narrow-body four-engined jet airliner produced between 1961 and 1963 by the Convair division of American company General Dynamics. It was a stretched version of its earlier Convair 880 produced in response to a request from American Airlines: the 990 was lengthened by , which increased the number of passengers from between 88 and 110 in the 880 to between 96 and 121.
