Circumstance (1922 Film)
''Circumstance'' is a 1922 Australian silent film directed by Lawson Harris. Plot A young woman is seduced and deserted by a man. She is rescued by a wealthy novelist, who wants to write a story about her life. The novelist's cousin proposes to the girl, only to realise she is the same girl he seduced and abandoned earlier in his life. Lawson Harris
William Lawson Harris (June 30, 1897 – March 31, 1948) was an American director, actor, producer, and writer who made a number of films in Australia. He came to Australia originally at the behest of Arthur Shirley to work as production manager on '' The Throwback'' (1920) and stayed out there for a number of years. Harris was the father of actor and director John Derek. Biography Harris was born on June 30, 1897, in Evansville, Vanderburgh County, Indiana, the son of William James Harris (1874–1908) and Elizabeth Bettie Hawley (1877–?). He moved to Australia in 1920 with Arthur Shirley and set up an acting school. In 1921, he announced he would make a film about the return of the Jews to Jerusalem. Instead he made '' Circumstance'' (1922) for Austral Super Films, a company he had established with Cecil Hargraves. They launched a second film almost immediately. Arthur Shirley (31 August 1886 – 24 November 1967) was an Australian actor, writer, producer, and director of theatre and film. He experienced some success as a film actor in Hollywood between 1914 and 1920. Biography Early life Born Henry Raymond Shirley in Hobart to civil servant Henry Shirley and Sarah Ann, ''née'' Morton, he was baptised Arthur and attended Catholic schools. The National Film and Sound Archive of Australia (NFSA), known as ScreenSound Australia from 1999 to 2004, is Australia's audiovisual archive, responsible for developing, preserving, maintaining, promoting and providing access to a national collection of film, television, sound, radio, video games, new media, and related documents and artefacts. The collection ranges from works created in the late nineteenth century when the recorded sound and film industries were in their infancy, to those made in the present day. The NFSA collection first started as the National Historical Film and Speaking Record Library (within the then Commonwealth National Library) in 1935, becoming an independent cultural organisation in 1984. Gordon Collingridge
Gordon Collingridge was an Australian actor during the silent film era. He played many matinee idol type roles, most notably for director Beaumont Smith and opposite Louise Lovely in ''Jewelled Nights'' (1925). Lovely called him "the male screen star to the manner born." He had spent a number of years working on Queensland stations. Yvonne Pavis
Yvonne Pavis (12 May 1890-??) was an English-born actress, writer, and producer. She began acting in Hollywood in 1910 with the Vitagraph Company, occasionally acting under the name Marie Pavis. In 1922, she went to Australia and formed a production company with Lawson Harris. Silent Film
A silent film is a film with no synchronized recorded sound (or more generally, no audible dialogue). Though silent films convey narrative and emotion visually, various plot elements (such as a setting or era) or key lines of dialogue may, when necessary, be conveyed by the use of title cards. The term "silent film" is something of a misnomer, as these films were almost always accompanied by live sounds. During the silent era that existed from the mid-1890s to the late 1920s, a pianist, theater organist—or even, in large cities, a small orchestra—would often play music to accompany the films. Pianists and organists would play either from sheet music, or improvisation. Sometimes a person would even narrate the inter-title cards for the audience. Though at the time the technology to synchronize sound with the film did not exist, music was seen as an essential part of the viewing experience.
