''Circles in a Forest'' is a 1989 South African drama film directed by Regardt van den Bergh and starring Ian Bannen, Brion James and Joe Stewardson. The film score was composed by Leonard Rosenman. The film is adapted from the novel by Dalene Matthee. Plot Saul Barnard befriends an elephant as a child, and later goes back to rescue it as a man. Ian Bannen
Ian Edmund Bannen (29 June 1928 – 3 November 1999) was a Scottish actor with a long career in film, on stage, and on television. He was nominated for an Academy Award for his performance in '' The Flight of the Phoenix'' (1965), the first Scottish actor to receive the honour, as well as two BAFTA Film Awards for his performances in Sidney Lumet's ''The Offence'' (1973) and John Boorman's '' Hope and Glory'' (1987). ''Circles in a Forest'' is a novel by Dalene Matthee, originally written and published in Afrikaans as ''Kringe in 'n Bos'' in 1984. It is the first book in her series of four "forest novels", set in the Knysna forest. The other three "forest novels" are ''Fiela se Kind'' (''Fiela’s Child'') published in 1985, ''Moerbeibos'' (''The Mulberry Forest'') published in 1987 and ''Toorbos'' (''Dreamforest'', later translated as ''Karoelina’s Forest'') published in 2003. ''Circles in a Forest'' became a best-seller and has been translated into English, Portuguese, Dutch, French, Icelandic, Spanish, Hebrew, German, Swedish, Italian, Finnish and Norwegian. Dalene Matthee
Dalene Matthee (13 October 1938 – 20 February 2005) was a South African author best known for her four "Forest Novels", written in and around the Knysna Forest. Her books have been translated into fourteen languages, including English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Hebrew and Icelandic, and over a million copies have been sold worldwide. Biography She was born Dalena Scott in Riversdale in the then Cape Province in 1938. After graduating from the local high school in 1957, she studied music at a conservatory in Oudtshoorn as well as at the Holy Cross Covent in Graaff-Reinet. Her first book was a children's story, ''Die Twaalfuurstokkie'' (The Twelve-o'-clock Stick), published in 1970. In 1982 a collection of short stories called ''Die Judasbok'' (The Judas Goat) was also published. Judi Trott (born 11 November 1962) is an English actress and is best known for her portrayal of the Lady Marion of Leaford in the popular 1980s TV series ''Robin of Sherwood''.
