Cinema Of Puerto Rico
The history of the Cinema industry in Puerto Rico predates Hollywood, being conceived after the first industries emerged in some locations of the United States, Switzerland, Denmark, Italy, France, Great Britain and Germany. During the US invasion of the island in 1898, American soldiers brought cameras to record what they saw. By 1912, Puerto Ricans would begin to produce their own films. After the early images recorded by the American soldiers in 1898, most of the films produced in the island were documentaries. It wasn't until 1912 that Rafael Colorado D'Assoy recorded the first non-documentary film titled ''Un drama en Puerto Rico''. After that, Colorado and Antonio Capella Martínez created the Film Industrial Society of Puerto Rico in 1916, producing their first film titled ''Por la hembra y el gallo''. ''Romance Tropical'' is a 1934 Puerto Rican film photographed, directed and produced by Puerto Rican film pioneer, Juan Emilio Viguié. ''Romance Tropical'' was first-ever Puerto Rican film with sound and the second feature length Spanish-language film with sound in the world. Fiend Of Dope Island
''Fiend of Dope Island'', also released as ''Whiplash'', was a lurid men's adventure type motion picture filmed in 1959 and released in 1961. The picture starred and was co-written by Bruce Bennett and was the final film directed by Nate Watt. It was filmed in Puerto Rico where producer J. Harold Odell had previously filmed his ''Machete'' (1958) and '' Counterplot'' (1959). ''Machete'' is a 1958 American drama film directed by Kurt Neumann and written by Kurt Neumann and Carroll Young. Rosaura Andreu
Rosaura Andreu (1 January 1918 – 21 November 2010) was an actress born in El Paso, Texas to actress Cecilia Cavero. Andreu is best remembered in Puerto Rico for playing the character "Titi Chagua" in a local television show for children. Cecilia Cavero moved with her children to Havana, where Rosaura Andreu met her first husband: the famous Cuban comedian Leopoldo Fernández (Tres Patines), Leopoldo Fernandez, nicknamed "Tres Patines." Andreu first visited Puerto Rico as part of a Cuban theatrical troupe. Years later she settled on the island and joined the group La farandula bohemia. Marta Romero
Marta Romero (17 February 1928 – 31 May 2013) was a Puerto Rican actress and singer, and one of the pioneers in Puerto Rican television. Early life Romero was born on Calle Mora in downtown Ponce, a city in the south coast of Puerto Rico and was raised in Machuelo Abajo, then a rural neighborhood located on the road from Ponce to Juana Díaz. In 1940, when she was thirteen years old, she won the contest in a local radio station, ''Los aficionados de WPAB'', an amateur show for performers. Axel Anderson
Axel Anderson (December 11, 1929 – December 16, 2012) was a German actor who was very popular in his adopted homeland of Puerto Rico. Biography Early life Anderson was born Axel Levy to a Jewish family in Berlin, Germany. In 1936 Anderson's family escaped the Holocaust by emigrating to Paraguay. Due to political instability in Paraguay, Anderson's family soon moved to Argentina. Anderson started acting as a teenager, working at the ''Teatro Alemán Independiente'', a small theater troupe mainly composed of German expatriates who performed in German. During the 1950s, Anderson moved his young family to Bogotá, Colombia where he worked in theater. The family later moved to the Dominican Republic. Jack Delano
Jack Delano (born Jacob Ovcharov; August 1, 1914 – August 12, 1997) was a Ukrainian immigrant who became an accomplished photographer for the Works Progress Administration, United Fund, and most notably, the Farm Security Administration (FSA). He wore many hats as he also was a composer known for his use of Puerto Rican folk material, started a television production company, and was a cartoonist, poet, moviemaker, professor, and architectural designer. Ramón Rivero (May 29, 1909 – August 24, 1956) — known as Diplo — was a Puerto Rican comedian, actor, and composer. Rivero made his television debut in Puerto Rico in "La Taberna India" (The India Tavern), the first comedy/variety show on Puerto Rican TV. Nemesio Canales
Nemesio Canales (December 18, 1878 – September 14, 1923) was a Puerto Rican essayist, journalist, novelist, playwright, politician and activist who defended women's civil rights. As a politician, he presented a bill to the Puerto Rico House of Representatives, which was defeated 23 votes to 7, giving women their full civil rights, including the right to vote. Early years Canales (birth name: Nemesio Rosario Canales Rivera) was born on December 18, 1878 in Jayuya. He was the firstborn of Rosario Canales Quintero and Francisca Rivera Rivera.
