Cimitero Di Soffiano
Cimitero di Soffiano (The Soffiano cemetery) is a cemetery located in Florence. The main entrance is located at the corner between Soffiano and Guardavalle. History By decree of 1894 the Venerabile Arciconfraternita della Misericordia di Firenze decided to construct a new cemetery (after that of the Pinti) in the area of Soffiano, at a point imposed by the City of Florence because it was hidden from the town of Florence from the Colle di Bellosguardo and distant of about two miles from San Frediano gate. Work began in 1896, the design having been done by architect Michelangelo Maiorfi: Cardinal Agostino Bausa blessed the first stone on 31 May that year. The entrance is provided with a serene and travertine stone facade, with the coats of arms of the Misericordia and Florence painted along with those of the ancient Arts of Florence; on the sides of the entrance are instead sculpted those of the city districts, the Mercy and the People's Cross. Roberto Ridolfi (historian)
Roberto Ridolfi (or di Ridolfo) (18 November 1531 – 18 February 1612) was an Italian and Florentine nobleman and conspirator. Biography Ridolfi belonged to a famous family of Florence, where he was born. As a banker he had business connections with England, and about 1555 he settled in London, where he soon became a person of some importance, consorting with William Cecil and other prominent men. In Trinity term 1564 he was recorded as "Robertus Ridolphy, of London, merchant stranger" in a case in Common Pleas. During the early years of Elizabeth's reign he began to take a more active part in politics, associating with the discontented Roman Catholics in England and communicating with their friends abroad. In 1570, he set to work on a plot against Elizabeth I which usually bears his name: the Ridolfi plot. The House of Strozzi is the name of an ancient (later noble) Florentine family, who like their great rivals the Medici family, began in banking before moving into politics. Romano Romanelli
Romano Romanelli (14 May 1882 – 25 September 1968) was an Italian artist, writer, and naval officer. He is best known for his sculptures and his medals. Romanelli was born in Florence, the son of sculptor Raffaello Romanelli. Romano's works occupy an important place in the Avant-Garde movement and form part of the artistic legacy of the Romanelli dynasty, which continues to this day. He is buried in the Soffiano cemetery in Florence. Raffaello Romanelli (13 May 1856 – 3 April 1928) was an Italian sculptor, born in Florence, Italy. The son of Florentine sculptor Pasquale Romanelli, Raffaello is fore-mostly known for his monuments and portrait busts dedicated to noteworthy figures. He worked around the globe in America, Argentina, Austria, Cuba, England, France, Germany, Italy, Romania and Russia. Raffaello worked from two studios both located in the ‘Oltrarno’ district in Florence, initially from the family studio in Borgo San Frediano and then from a new one in Piazza Santo Spirito. Both studios were former churches: after being deconsecrated, they were converted into sculpture studios to make use of the ample space provided by the high ceilings.
