''Cichlasoma'' is a genus of freshwater fish in the cichlid family. The genus was previously very large (a wastebasket taxon), including cichlids from North America, including Central America, and South America. Reclassification and subsequent splitting of the genus by Sven O. Kullander and other ichthyologists has resulted in removing many of the former species from ''Cichlasoma'' to genera such as ''Amphilophus'', ''Archocentrus'', ''Herichthys'', '' Heros'', ''Nandopsis'', ''Parachromis'', '' Thorichthys'', ''Vieja'' and others in the tribe Heroini. William John Swainson
William John Swainson FLS, FRS (8 October 1789 – 6 December 1855), was an English ornithologist, malacologist, conchologist, entomologist and artist. Life Swainson was born in Dover Place, St Mary Newington, London, the eldest son of John Timothy Swainson the Second (1756–1824), an original fellow of the Linnean Society. Thorichthys
''Thorichthys'' is a genus of cichlid fish that is native to the Atlantic slope of Middle America, ranging from southern Veracruz and the Yucatán Peninsula in Mexico, to Guatemala and Honduras, with introduced populations in a few other countries. They tend to inhabit moderately-flowing to standing water such as rivers, streams, lakes, ditches and lagoons, and they are primarily freshwater fish, although ''T. helleri'' and ''T. meeki'' may occur in slightly brackish habitats. ''Thorichthys'' have somewhat pointy heads and stripes down their body, and mostly feed on invertebrates and detritus. Members of ''Thorichthys'' do not exceed in standard length, and they are popular aquarium fish, especially the well-known firemouth cichlid (''T. meeki''). Sven Oscar Kullander
Sven Oscar Kullander (born 30 November 1952 in Sollefteå) is a Sweden, Swedish biologist specialised in ichthyology. He primarily researches cichlids – notably the genus ''Apistogramma'' and the ''Cichlasoma''-complex – and other tropical fresh water fishes. He also has been working with Endangered species, endangered fish species in Sweden. He studied at the universities of Umeå University, Umeå and Stockholm University, Stockholm, and took his Doctor of Philosophy, Ph.D. in Stockholm in 1984. He is currently senior curator at the Swedish Museum of Natural History in Stockholm, with the responsibility for the ichthyologic and Herpetology, herpetologic collections. Kullander also coordinates the museum's contributions to FishBase. Kullander has produced more than 100 scientific and popular publications on fishes, and described many groups and new species of cichlids.
