Church Of The Holy Archangels, Blaj
The Church of the Holy Archangels ( ro, Biserica Sfinților Arhangheli), also known as the ''Greeks' Church'' (''Biserica grecilor''), is a Romanian Orthodox church located at 3 Mitropolit Ioan Vancea Street in the Transylvanian city of Blaj. Until 1948 the church was Romanian Greek-Catholic Church, Romanian Greek-Catholic. The church is situated close to the bridge that crosses the Târnava Mare, Târnava Mare River. Built around 1770, it stands on the site of a previous wooden church. Construction was undertaken by local residents, who included Aromanians, Aromanian merchants erroneously described as "Greeks", giving rise to the nickname. The iconostasis, artistically sculpted in 1776, was later painted in Brâncovenesc style, as the initial art was destroyed. This ensemble was praised by Nicolae Iorga. AGERPRES () is the national news agency of Romania. History The National News Agency "AGERPRES" is the oldest Romanian news agency and the first autonomous agency in Romania. It was established in March 1889 at the initiative of Foreign Minister Petre P. Alexandru Sterca-Șuluțiu, also called Alexandru Sterca-Șuluțiu de Cărpiniș (February 15, 1794 – September 7, 1867), was an ethnic Romanian Eastern Catholic cleric in Imperial Austrian Transylvania, and the Metropolitan of the Transylvanian Greek Catholic Church. He was the brother of 1848 revolutionary commander Ioan Sterca-Șuluțiu. During his service the Diocese of Alba Iulia and Făgăraş (centred at Blaj) was removed from the jurisdiction of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Esztergom (in Hungary) and became an ecclesiastic province in its own right, with the Dioceses of Oradea Mare, Gherla and Lugoj as suffragans (subordinate dioceses). Ioan Axente Sever (born Ioan Axente; 15 April 1821–13 August 1906) was a Romanians, Romanian revolutionary in Austria-Hungary who participated in the Transylvanian Revolution of 1848. Biography Early years He was born in Frâua (called Axente Sever, Sibiu, Axente Sever since 1931), the son of Iacob Baciu and Ana, née Maxim. From 1831 to 1835 he studied in Blaj.
