The Church of Nossa Senhora do Rosário ( pt, Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Rosário) is a 16th-century Azores, Azorean temple in the freguesia, civil parish of Topo (Calheta), Nossa Senhora do Rosário, municipality of Calheta (Azores), Calheta, being reconstructed after the ''Mandado de Deus'' earthquake that affected the islands of São Jorge Island, São Jorge and Pico Island, Pico. History The primitive church was likely constructed in the 16th century. On 9 July 1757, the church was seriously damaged by the earthquake that became known, colloquially, as the ''Mandado de Deus'' (''Sent from God'')". It was Father Matias Pereira de Sousa, who initiated the reconstruction of the church, at the same time burying 84 victims of the ''Mandado'' in two common graves. Topo, also known as Nossa Senhora do Rosário, is a ''freguesia'' ("civil parish") on the northeastern corner of the municipality Calheta on the island of São Jorge. It is considered the first settlement on the island of São Jorge to attain the status of municipality; from 1510 to 1867 "Vila do Topo" was the municipal seat of Topo, which included the neighboring parish of Santo Antão. Calheta () is a municipality on the island of São Jorge, in the Portuguese autonomous region of Azores. The municipality includes the eastern portion of the island of São Jorge and borders the municipality of Velas. The population in 2011 was 3,773, in an area of 126.26 km².
