Church Of The Immaculate Conception (Farra D'Isonzo)
The Church of the Immaculate Conception is an Italian church located in Borgo Zuppini, a district of Farra d'Isonzo. The church dates back to the 17th century. It belonged to the Gradiscan family of the Zuppini counts. In November 1665, Emperor Leopold confirmed the noble title to brothers Giovanni Battista, Antonio and Filippo. The church was erected on land owned by the Zuppini family by Count Giovanni Battista to fulfill a vow, following his recovery from an illness. The church was once private property of the Zuppini family, but it belongs to the Parish of Farra d'Isonzo since 1924. A descendant of the founder, died in 1778, was buried in the chapel. It was dedicated to the Immaculate Conception, to which the count had turned to beg for grace. It is the oldest church in the diocese named after the Immaculate Conception. Farra D'Isonzo
Farra d'Isonzo (; sl, Fara ob Soči; fur, Fare; Southeastern Friulian: ) is an Italian ''comune'' in the region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia. History The name "Farra" is of Lombard origin, and derives from "''Fara''", meaning "a stronghold held by individual families or clans". The Romans later had a "'' statio''"—or courier relay point—here, near which they built a bulky bridge on the Isonzo river in a place called Mainizza to improve communications with the eastern territories. It was on this strategic bridge that the Goths, the Ostrogoths, the Lombards, the Avari, the Huns, the Hungarians and the Turks would later pass to invade the empire. Economy Today Farra is still a thriving center for the numerous vineyards that cover its vast territory. Gradisca D'Isonzo
Gradisca d'Isonzo ( fur, Gardiscja or ''Gardiscje'', sl, Gradišče ob Soči, archaic german: Gradis am Sontig) is a town and ''comune'' of the Province of Gorizia in Friuli-Venezia Giulia, north-eastern Italy. The lawyer, linguist, philologist Philippe Sarchi was born in Gradisca d'Isonzo. Geography The municipality is located in north-eastern Italy on the right bank of the Isonzo River, about southwest of Gorizia. It received town privileges on 14 July 1936. Zuppini Family
The Zuppini were an Italian noble family. The Zuppini possibly originated from Gradisca. According to some sources they moved to Gradisca in the early 16th century, together with other patrician families. They became part of the nobility of the Holy Roman Empire as hereditary peers in the early 16th century. In the 17th century, they became Counts of Farra d'Isonzo, where they built a chapel between 1665 and 1669. Leopold I (Leopold Ignaz Joseph Balthasar Franz Felician; hu, I. Lipót; 9 June 1640 – 5 May 1705) was Holy Roman Emperor, King of Hungary, Croatia, and Bohemia. The Immaculate Conception is the belief that the Virgin Mary was free of original sin from the moment of her conception.
