''Chronicle of the Years of Fire'' ( ar, وقائع سنين الجمر, Waqāʾiʿu sinīna l-jamri; french: Chronique des Années de Braise; these names both mean "Chronicle of the Years of Embers") is a 1975 Algerian drama historical film directed by Mohammed Lakhdar-Hamina. It depicts the Algerian War of Independence as seen through the eyes of a peasant. The film won the ''Palme d'Or'' prize at the 1975 Cannes Film Festival. Mohammed Lakhdar-Hamina
Mohammed Lakhdar-Hamina ( ar, محمد الأخضر حمينة; born in M'Sila, Algeria, M'sila in 1934) is an Algerian film director and screenwriter. He is best known for his 1975 film ''Chronicle of the Years of Fire''. He is one of the most prominent figures in contemporary Arab cinema, Arabic cinema. Biography Born in 1934 at M'Sila, Algeria, Lakhdar began his studies in his native country. He first became interested in the world of cinema at the Lycée Carnot in Cannes, France. After beginning studies of agriculture and law student, law at French universities, he deserted the French Army in 1958 and joined the anti-French Algerian Resistance in Tunisia, where he worked for the provisional Algerian government in exile. His film career began as he joined the Algerian Maquis (guerrillas). Omar al-Mukhṭār Muḥammad bin Farḥāṭ al-Manifī ( ar, عُمَر الْمُخْتَار مُحَمَّد بِن فَرْحَات الْمَنِفِي ; 20 August 1858 – 16 September 1931), called The Lion of the Desert, known among the colonial Italians as Matari of the Mnifa, was the leader of native resistance in Cyrenaica (currently Eastern Libya) under the Senussids, against the Italian colonization of Libya. A teacher-turned-general, Omar was also a prominent figure of the Senussi movement, and he is considered the national hero of Libya and a symbol of resistance in the Arab and Islamic worlds. Beginning in 1911, he organised and, for nearly twenty years, led the Libyan resistance movement against the Italian colonial empire during the First and Second Italo-Senussi Wars. Algeria has submitted films for the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film since 1969.
