Christopher O'Sullivan
Christopher O'Sullivan (born 2 June 1982) is an Irish Fianna Fáil politician who has been a Teachta Dála (TD) for the Cork South-West constituency since the 2020 general election. Early and personal life O'Sullivan is a law graduate of the University of Limerick. His father, Christy O'Sullivan, served as a Fianna Fáil TD from 2007 to 2011. Political career Cork County Council O'Sullivan was co-opted onto Cork County Council in 2007, replacing his father, Christy O'Sullivan. He was subsequently re-elected in the 2009, 2014 and 2019 local elections. He served as Mayor of Cork County Council from 2019 to 2020. Deirdre Kelly was co-opted to O'Sullivan's seat on Cork County Council following his election to the Dáil. Dáil Éireann O'Sullivan was elected to the 33rd Dail at the 2020 general election, taking the second seat in the Cork South-West constituency. A Teachta Dála ( , ; plural ), abbreviated as TD (plural ''TDanna'' in Irish, TDs in English), is a member of Dáil Éireann, the lower house of the Oireachtas (the Irish Parliament). It is the equivalent of terms such as ''Member of Parliament'' (MP) or '' Member of Congress'' used in other countries. The official translation of the term is "Deputy to the Dáil", although a more literal translation is "Assembly Delegate". Overview For electoral purposes, the Republic of Ireland is divided into areas known as constituencies, each of which elects three, four, or five TDs. 2019 Irish Local Elections
The 2019 Irish local elections were held in all local authorities in Ireland on Friday, 24 May 2019, on the same day as the 2019 European Parliament election and a referendum easing restrictions on divorce. Each local government area is divided into local electoral areas (LEAs) where three to seven councillors are elected on the system of proportional representation by means of the single transferable vote. Administrative changes There was one change to the local government areas since the 2014 elections, with a transfer of land from County Cork to Cork city under the Local Government Act 2019. The poll in the Ballybay–Clones LEA on Monaghan County Council was deferred due to the death of a candidate. Overview These elections took place after the coming into force of the Local Government Reform Act 2014, under which city and county councils were contested under substantially redrawn local electoral area (LEA) boundaries, including an overall increase of seats to 949, up from 883 in the 2009 local elections. 2020 Irish General Election
The 2020 Irish general election took place on Saturday 8 February, to elect the 33rd Dáil, the lower house of Ireland's parliament. The election was called following the dissolution of the 32nd Dáil by the president, at the request of the Taoiseach, Leo Varadkar, on 14 January 2020. The members, Teachtaí Dála (TDs), were elected by single transferable vote in multi-seat constituencies. It was the first election since 1918 to be held on a weekend. The election was an unprecedented three-way race, with the three largest parties each winning a share of the vote between 20% and 25%. Fianna Fáil finished with 38 seats (including one TD returned automatically as outgoing Ceann Comhairle). Sinn Féin made significant gains; it received the most first-preference votes, and won 37 seats, the party's best result since 1923.
