Christoffel Van Dijck
Christoffel van Dijck (c. 1600-5, Dexheim – November 1669, Amsterdam) was a German-born Dutch punchcutter and typefounder, who cut punches and operated a foundry for casting metal type. Van Dijck's type was widely used at a time when Amsterdam had become a major centre of world printing. Life Van Dijck was born in Dexheim, now in Germany, to a Dutch Protestant family. His father Gilbert Breberenus van den Dijck and half-brother Johannes were Calvinist ministers. Gilbert had come to Dexheim from Breberen (in the United Duchies of Jülich-Cleves-Berg). Christoffel was trained as a goldsmith. By 1640 he moved to Amsterdam as a journeyman. On 11 October 1642 he applied to marry Swaentje Harmens (c. 1600/1601 – 1668) from Nordhorn, the widow of former minister Jan de Praet. Dexheim
Dexheim is an ''Ortsgemeinde'' – a municipality belonging to a ''Verbandsgemeinde'', a kind of collective municipality – in the Mainz-Bingen district in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. Geography Location Dexheim lies between Mainz and Worms, in Rhenish Hesse. The winemaking centre belongs to the ''Verbandsgemeinde'' Rhein-Selz, whose seat is in Oppenheim. History Dexheim's history began long before its first documentary mention. Finds within Dexheim's municipal limits have yielded information about the Germani who lived here. These artefacts can be seen at the Roman-Germanic Central Museum (''Römisch-Germanisches Zentralmuseum'') in Mainz. Joseph Moxon
Joseph Moxon (8 August 1627 – February 1691), hydrographer to Charles II, was an English printer specialising in mathematical books and maps, a maker of globes and mathematical instruments, and mathematical lexicographer. He produced the first English-language dictionary devoted to mathematics, the first detailed instructional manual for printers, and the first English-language how-to books for tradesmen. In November 1678, he became the first tradesman to be elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society. A fleuron (;), also known as printers' flower, is a typographic element, or glyph, used either as a punctuation mark or as an ornament for typographic compositions. Fleurons are stylized forms of flowers or leaves; the term derives from the fro, floron ("flower"). Blackletter (sometimes black letter), also known as Gothic script, Gothic minuscule, or Textura, was a script used throughout Western Europe from approximately 1150 until the 17th century. It continued to be commonly used for the Danish, Norwegian, and Swedish languages until the 1870s, and for the German language until the 1940s, when Hitler's distaste for the supposedly "Jewish-influenced" script saw it officially discontinued in 1941. Fraktur is a notable script of this type, and sometimes the entire group of blackletter faces is incorrectly referred to as Fraktur. In typography, italic type is a cursive font based on a stylised form of calligraphic handwriting. Owing to the influence from calligraphy, italics normally slant slightly to the right. Italics are a way to emphasise key points in a printed text, to identify many types of creative works, to cite foreign words or phrases, or, when quoting a speaker, a way to show which words they stressed. One manual of English usage described italics as "the print equivalent of Underline, underlining"; in other words, underscore in a manuscript directs a typesetter to use italic. In Latin script typography, roman is one of the three main kinds of historical type, alongside blackletter and italic.
