Christchurch Catholic Cathedral
The Christchurch Catholic Cathedral is the planned replacement to the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament which was damaged in the 2010 and 2011 Canterbury earthquakes and later demolished. This makes the cathedral the future mother church of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Christchurch. It will be located adjacent Victoria Square in the city centre of Christchurch, New Zealand. The cathedral is expected to be completed by 2026. The plans were announced by Bishop Paul Martin on 7 December 2019. The Latin Rite Roman Catholic Diocese of Christchurch is a suffragan diocese of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Wellington. Its cathedral and see city are located in Christchurch, the largest city in the South Island of New Zealand. It was formed on 5 May 1887 from a portion of the territory of the Diocese of Wellington, which was elevated to archdiocese later that same month. Paul Gerard Martin S.M. (born 5 May 1967) is a New Zealand prelate of the Roman Catholic Church, who has been serving as the coadjutor archbishop of Wellington since January 2021.
