Jesus Christ
Jesus, likely from he, יֵשׁוּעַ, translit=Yēšūaʿ, label=Hebrew/Aramaic ( AD 30 or 33), also referred to as Jesus Christ or Jesus of Nazareth (among other names and titles), was a first-century Jewish preacher and religious leader; he is the central figure of Christianity, the world's largest religion. Most Christians believe he is the incarnation of God the Son and the awaited Messiah (the Christ) prophesied in the Hebrew Bible. Virtually all modern scholars of antiquity agree that Jesus existed historically. Research into the historical Jesus has yielded some uncertainty on the historical reliability of the Gospels and on how closely the Jesus portrayed in the New Testament reflects the historical Jesus, as the only detailed records of Jesus' life are contained in the Gospels. Jesus was a Galilean Jew who was circumcised, was baptized by John the Baptist, began his own ministry and was often referred to as "rabbi". Jesus debated with fellow Jews on ho ... This refers to the Christian soteriology, salvation he accomplished, and is based on the metaphor of Redemption (theology)#In Christianity, redemption, or "buying back". In the New Testament, ''redemption'' is used to refer both to deliverance from sin and to freedom from captivity. Although the gospels do not use the title "Redeemer", redemption is used in several of Pauline epistles, Paul's letters. Leon Morris says that "Paul uses the concept of redemption primarily to speak of the saving significance of the death of Christ." Universality The New Testament speaks of Christ as the one Saviour for all people. On Christ's role as universal Saviour, cf. Gerald O'Collins, ''Salvation for All: God's Other Peoples'', OUP (2008). ''Christ the Redeemer'' ( pt, Cristo Redentor, standard , ) is an Art Deco statue of Jesus Christ in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, created by French sculptor Paul Landowski and built by Brazilian engineer Heitor da Silva Costa, in collaboration with French engineer Albert Caquot. Romanian sculptor Gheorghe Leonida sculpted the face. Constructed between 1922 and 1931, the statue is high, excluding its pedestal. The arms stretch wide. It is made of reinforced concrete and soapstone. The statue weighs 635 metric tons (625 long, 700 short tons), and is located at the peak of the Corcovado mountain in the Tijuca National Park overlooking the city of Rio de Janeiro. It is in the church of Santa Maria sopra Minerva in Rome, to the left of the main altar. The work was commissioned in June 1514, by the Roman patrician Metello Vari, who stipulated only that the nude standing figure would have the Cross in his arms, but left the composition entirely to Michelangelo. Michelangelo was working on a first version of this statue in his studio in Macello dei Corvi around 1515, but abandoned it in roughed-out condition when he discovered a black vein in the white marble, remarked upon by Vari in a letter, and later by Ulisse Aldrovandi. A new version was hurriedly substituted in 1519-1520 to fulfil the terms of the contract. Michelangelo worked on it in Florence, and the move to Rome and final touches were entrusted to an apprentice, ... Cristo Redentor (album)
''Cristo Redentor'' is the debut album by Harvey Mandel. Richie Unterberger of AllMusic writes that "Mandel's debut remains his best early work." John Tobler wrote in the liner notes of the CD that Mandel "was good enough to be invited to audition for The Rolling Stones and he worked with John Mayall and Canned Heat - but it is for this ''Cristo Redentor'' album, and particularly for the utterly classic ''Wade in the Water'' that he will be remembered." This album is completely instrumental with the exception of the title track where soprano Jacqueline May Allen, joined by Carolyn Willis, Edna Wright and Julia Tillman Waters, blend their wordless voices as if another instrument. Track listing Personnel *Harvey Mandel - guitar * Peter Drake - steel guitar *Art Stavro - bass at New York sessions *Bob Moore - bass (with help from Hargus Robbins) *Hargus Robbins - piano, "chauffeur" * Kenny Buttrey - drums *Eddie Hoh - drums at New York sessions *Chip Martin - rhythm guitar * ...
