Henry Cholmley
Sir Henry Cholmley (1609–1666) was an English politician who sat in the House of Commons at various times between 1641 and 1666. He supported the Parliamentary cause in the English Civil War. Biography Cholmley was the second surviving son of Sir Richard Cholmley of Whitby and his first wife Susan Legard, daughter of John Legard, merchant of London and Ganton, Yorkshire. He was baptised on 2 February 1609. He entered Inner Temple in 1628. His father died in 1631, and he travelled abroad in 1633. In 1634, he was expelled from Inner Temple after the Christmas disorders. He was lieutenant-colonel of militia in Yorkshire by 1640. In January 1641, Cholmley was elected Member of Parliament for Malton in the Long Parliament. He was knighted on 27 December 1641 and was a J.P. for Yorkshire West Riding from 1642 to 1648. Henry Cholmley (died 1616)
Sir Henry Cholmley of Roxby in Whitby Strand (1556–1616), was an English Member of Parliament. He was the only son of Sir Richard Cholmley of Whitby, Yorkshire. He was educated at Hart Hall, Oxford (by 1568), Jesus College, Cambridge (1573) and Caius College, Cambridge, where he was a fellow commoner in 1573, after which he studied law at Lincoln's Inn in 1577. On the death of his half-brother in 1596 he inherited the family seat at Whitby. He was elected a Member (MP) of the Parliament of England for Westmorland in 1597. He was knighted in 1603. His wife, Margaret Babthorpe (daughter of Sir William Babthorpe, himself the son of Sir William Babthorpe, and Barbara, daughter of Sir Robert Constable), whom he married in about 1575. Their daughter Barbara Cholmley (c. 1575 – 28 February 1619) married Thomas Belasyse, 1st Viscount Fauconberg. Richard Cholmley
Sir Richard Cholmondeley (or Cholmeley) (c. 1460–1521) was an English farmer and soldier, who served as Lieutenant of the Tower of London from 1513 to 1520 during the reign of Henry VIII. He is remembered because of his tomb at the Tower of London and because he is fictionalized as a character in Gilbert and Sullivan's darkly comic opera, ''The Yeomen of the Guard''. Cholmeley's name has frequently been misspelled "Cholmondeley" because of its misspelling in the plaque on his tomb, which led to the misspelling of the character's name in the opera; other branches of Cholmeley's family use the longer spelling. Knighted in 1497 for valour in battle against the Scots, Cholmeley continued to serve as a soldier until 1513, becoming entrusted with many positions of responsibility for security of castles and fortifications in England. Sir George Strickland, 7th Baronet
Sir George Strickland, 7th Baronet (26 May 1782 – 23 December 1874), also known as Sir George Cholmley was an English Member of Parliament and lawyer. He took the name Cholmley to succeed to the Cholmley estates in 1865. Life Strickland was the second son of Sir William Strickland, 6th Baronet, of Boynton in Yorkshire, but his older brother died before him and he inherited the baronetcy on his father's death in 1834. Strickland inherited Boynton Hall and was Lord of the Manor of Wintringham. Strickland began his career in the law, being called to the Bar in 1810, and practised as a barrister on the Northern Circuit. However, he took an interest in politics, supporting the Whigs and being an ardent supporter of Parliamentary reform and an early advocate of the secret ballot.
