The specific ''hybridus'' is Latin for ''hybrid''; Peter Simon Pallas thought it might be a hybrid of white-winged black tern and common tern, writing "''Sterna fissipes 'Chlidonias leucopterus''et Hirundine 'Sterna hirundo''natam''”.
