China–Holy See Relations
There have been no official People's Republic of ChinaHoly See relations as the Holy See instead recognizes the Republic of China as the representative of China. However, in September 2018 the People's Republic of China and the Holy See signed an agreement allowing the pope to appoint and veto bishops approved by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). The agreement was renewed for another two years in October 2020. History The Beijing government broke off diplomatic relations with the Holy See in 1951 after a complicated incident. Throughout 1950 and 1951, the People's Republic of China had been putting pressure on the Vatican by threatening a breakaway of "independent Catholics", but many priests opposed the movement, and Zhou Enlai sought a middle ground. Joseph Zen Ze-kiun
Joseph Zen Ze-kiun SDB (, born 13 January 1932) is a cardinal of the Catholic Church from Hong Kong, who served as the sixth Bishop of Hong Kong. He was appointed cardinal in 2006, and has been outspoken on issues regarding human rights, political freedom, and religious liberty. His strong ties with the pro-democracy camp often attract criticism from the pro-Beijing camp and the government of the People's Republic of China. Ettore Balestrero (21 December 1966) is an Italian prelate of the Catholic Church who serves as the Apostolic Nunicio to the Democratic Republic of the Congo. He previously served as Nuncio to Colombia and in Rome at the Secretariat of State as Undersecretary for Relations with States. The China Philharmonic Orchestra (中国爱乐乐团; abbreviated CPO) is an orchestra founded in Beijing, China, on May 25, 2000, based on the previous "China Broadcasting Symphony Orchestra". Joseph Li Shan (; born March 1965 in Daxing District, Beijing) is a Chinese Catholic prelate who serves as Archbishop of Beijing. He was consecrated a bishop on 21 September 2007, at age 42 at a ceremony at Nan Tang (South Cathedral) in Xuanwumen. His main consecrator to become bishop was John Fang Xingyao. Theodore Edgar McCarrick (born July 7, 1930) is a laicized American bishop and former cardinal of the Catholic Church.
