Chilean Submarine O'Brien (S22)
The Chilean submarine'' O'Brien'' was an in the Chilean Navy. Design and construction The submarine, built by Scottish company Scott Lithgow, was laid down on 17 January 1971, and launched on 21 December 1972. The planned July 1974 completion was delayed by the need to redo internal cabling. She was commissioned into the Chilean Navy on 15 April 1976. The submarine was named after John Thomond O'Brien, who fought in the Chilean War of Independence. Operational history ''O'Brien'' was in service from the mid-1970s until the mid-2000s. Decommissioning and fate ''O'Brien'' and sister boat ''Hyatt'' were replaced by the ''Thomson''-class submarines. She is now permanently docked in the Chilean city of Valdivia where she is open to visitors as a museum ship. John Thomond O'Brien
John Thomond O'Brien (1786–1861), also known in Spanish language, Spanish as Juan Thomond O'Brien, was an Argentine Army officer born in 1786 in Baltinglass, Co. Wicklow, son of Martin O'Brien dynasty, O'Brien and Honoria O'Conor, O'Connor. He fought in the Chilean War of Independence. Career John Thomond O'Brien left Ireland and arrived in Buenos Aires in 1812 to open a merchant house. On his way there, his ship crashed onto the rocks of Fernando Po Island in west Africa. Only he and a few others survived to continue their journey. Soon after arriving in Buenos Aires, the local people gave him the name Don Juan O'Brien. He enlisted in the army and fought in Uruguay with General Miguel Estanislao Soler. In 1816 O'Brien joined General José de San Martín's mounted grenadiers regiment in the Andes army. Scott Lithgow
Scott Lithgow, Limited was a Scottish shipbuilding company. History The Company was formed in 1967 by the merger of Scotts Shipbuilding and Engineering Company and Lithgows. Scott Lithgow was based in Port Glasgow and Greenock on the lower Clyde in Scotland. Scott Lithgow was nationalised and subsumed into British Shipbuilders in 1977. Reorganisation of Scott Lithgow in 1981 saw all the assets of its subsidiary companies transferred under the direct operational control of Scott Lithgow. From 1980, the company became the centre of British Shipbuilders’ Offshore Division and it was hoped that the offshore semi-submersible market would lead the yard back to profitability. The Chilean Navy ( es, Armada de Chile) is the naval warfare service branch of the Chilean Armed Forces. It is under the Ministry of National Defense. The Chilean submarine ''Hyatt'' (S23) was an ''Oberon''-class submarine in the Chilean Navy, originally launched under the name ''Condell''. The Type 209 is a class of diesel-electric attack submarine developed exclusively for export by Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft of Germany.
