Chile at the 1912 Summer Olympics in Stockholm, Sweden was the nation's first official appearance out of four editions of the Summer Olympic Games. Some sources claim that Chile was represented by one athlete that competed at the 1896 Summer Olympics. The all-male 1912 national team of fourteen athletes competed in sixteen events in four sports. Athletics 6 athletes represented Chile. Ranks given are within that athlete's heat for running events. Cycling Four cyclists represented Chile. It was the first appearance of the nation in cycling. Alberto Downey had the best time in the time trial, the only race held, placing 42nd. The team of four had a combined time that placed them 9th of the 15 teams. Chilean Olympic Committee
The Chilean Olympic Committee (COCh) (:es:Comité Olímpico Chile, Comité Olímpico Chile) is a non-profit private organization composed of all Chilean sports federations who join it and accept its governance through statutes and regulations. It was created on 20 June 1934 and recognised the same year by the International Olympic Committee. The Committee is the organization in charge of coordinating Olympic activities in Chile. Cycling At The 1912 Summer Olympics – Men's Team Time Trial
The men's team time trial was a road bicycle racing event held as part of the cycling at the 1912 Summer Olympics programme. It was the first appearance of the event. The competition was held on Sunday July 7, 1912. Each nation that sent at least four cyclists to the Cycling at the 1912 Summer Olympics – Men's individual time trial, individual time trial was also considered to have competed as a team. The times of the top four cyclists for each nation were summed to give a total team time, with the best total times winning. Great Britain at the 1912 Summer Olympics, Great Britain had three teams, as the English, Irish, and Scottish cyclists were considered separate. Belgium, Canada, and South Africa did not send enough cyclists to make a team. Three teams did not have enough cyclists finish to earn a valid team score. José Torres (cyclist)
José "Chegüi" Torres (May 3, 1936 – January 19, 2009) was a Puerto Rican-born American professional boxer. As an amateur boxer, he won a silver medal in the junior middleweight division at the 1956 Olympic Games in Melbourne. In 1965, he defeated Willie Pastrano to win the WBC, WBA and lineal light heavyweight championships. Torres trained with the legendary boxing trainer Cus D'Amato. In 1997, he was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame. Amateur career Born in the city of Ponce, Puerto Rico, Torres began boxing when he joined the United States Army as a teenager (he was 17 years old). His only amateur titles had come in Army and Inter-Service championships, several of which he had won. Torres was still in the Army when he won the Silver Medal in the light middleweight division at the 1956 Melbourne Olympic Games, where he lost to László Papp of Hungary in the final. The distance used was 40.2 kilometres, nearly 2 full kilometres shorter than that used in 1908 and since 1924.
