Children Of The Future (Steve Miller Band Album)
''Children of the Future'' is the debut album by the Steve Miller Band, released in 1968 by Capitol Records. Contributed by several writers, the songs on the album include a mixture of blues and psychedelic rock. The album was produced by British record producer-engineer Glyn Johns. It reached number 134 on the ''Billboard'' 200 album chart. Critical reception ''Rolling Stone'' described the first side, which plays as a single continuous track (subtitled Children of the Future), as being "constructed like ''Sgt Pepper''". Writing in ''Crawdaddy!'', Peter Knobler called the album "a triple moment of experience, knowledge, inspiration". However, many of the songs had been written earlier when Miller was working as a janitor at a Texas music studio. The Steve Miller Band is an American rock music, rock band formed in 1966 in San Francisco, California. The band is led by Steve Miller (musician), Steve Miller on guitar and lead vocals. The group had a string of mid- to late-1970s hit singles that are staples of classic rock, as well as several earlier psychedelic rock albums. Miller left his first band to move to San Francisco and form the Steve Miller Blues Band. Shortly after Harvey Kornspan negotiated the band's contract with Capitol Records in 1967, the band shortened its name to the Steve Miller Band. Crawdaddy!
''Crawdaddy'' was an American rock music magazine launched in 1966. It was created by Paul Williams, a Swarthmore College student at the time, in response to the increasing sophistication and cultural influence of popular music. The magazine was named after the Crawdaddy Club in London and published during its early years as ''Crawdaddy!'' (with an exclamation point). According to ''The New York Times'', ''Crawdaddy'' was "the first magazine to take rock and roll seriously", while the magazine's rival ''Rolling Stone'' acknowledged it as "the first serious publication devoted to rock & roll news and criticism". Timothy Lawrence Davis (November 29, 1943 – September 20, 1988) was a drummer, singer and songwriter, who co-founded the Steve Miller Band. History Davis was born in Milwaukee and raised in Janesville, Wisconsin. He played on the first five albums released by the Steve Miller Band and contributed lead and background vocals and songwriting. Davis left the band to work with others, such as Ben Sidran, and to commence a solo career. Shortly after his departure from Miller, Davis joined David Lindley in a band supporting Terry Reid, appearing at the Isle of Wight Festival 1970, Isle of Wight Festival in 1970. Davis had a modest hit in 1972, "Buzzy Brown", written by fellow Wisconsin musician and Steve Miller Band co-founder James "Curley" Cooke. Davis continued an association with Steve Miller, contributing two songs, co-written with Miller, to the 1984 Steve Miller Band album, ''Italian X Rays''. Hammond Organ
The Hammond organ is an electric organ invented by Laurens Hammond and John M. Hanert and first manufactured in 1935. Multiple models have been produced, most of which use sliding drawbars to vary sounds. Until 1975, Hammond organs generated sound by creating an electric current from rotating a metal tonewheel near an electromagnetic pickup, and then strengthening the signal with an amplifier to drive a speaker cabinet. The organ is commonly used with the Leslie speaker. Around two million Hammond organs have been manufactured. The organ was originally marketed by the Hammond Organ Company to churches as a lower-cost alternative to the wind-driven pipe organ, or instead of a piano. Charlie Segar was an American blues pianist and occasional singer, who is best known for being the first to record the blues standard, "Key to the Highway" (1940). Big Bill Broonzy
Big Bill Broonzy (born Lee Conley Bradley; June 26, 1903 – August 14, 1958) was an American blues singer, songwriter, and guitarist. His career began in the 1920s, when he played country music to mostly African American audiences. In the 1930s and 1940s, he navigated a change in style to a more urban blues sound popular with working-class black audiences. In the 1950s, a return to his traditional folk-blues roots made him one of the leading figures of the emerging American folk music revival and an international star. Key To The Highway
"Key to the Highway" is a blues standard that has been performed and recorded by several blues and other artists. Blues pianist Charlie Segar first recorded the song in 1940. Jazz Gillum and Big Bill Broonzy followed with recordings in 1940 and 1941, using an arrangement that has become the standard. When Little Walter updated the song in 1958 in an electric Chicago blues style, it became a success on the R&B record chart. A variety of artists have since interpreted the song, including Eric Clapton, who recorded several versions. Original recordings "Key to the Highway" is usually credited to Charles "Chas" Segar and William "Big Bill" Broonzy. Buster Brown (August 15, 1911 – January 31, 1976) was an American blues and Rhythm and blues, R&B singer best known for his hit record, hit, "Fannie Mae (song), Fannie Mae". Biography Brown was born in Cordele, Georgia, Cordele, Georgia. In the 1930s and 1940s he played harmonica at local nightclub, clubs and made a few non-commercial sound recording and reproduction, recordings. These included "War Song" and "I'm Gonna Make You Happy" (1943), which were recorded when he played at the folk festival at Fort Valley (GA) State Teachers College, for the Library of Congress' Folk Music Archive.
