Children Of Memory
''Children of Memory'' (''Niños de la Memoria'') is a documentary film produced by Kathryn Smith Pyle and Maria Teresa Rodriguez and directed by Maria Teresa Rodriguez. From 1980–1992 about 75,000 women, men and children died and disappeared during El Salvador’s civil war. It was known fact that most adults would be assassinated, but no one knows exactly what happened to the children. The film follows Pro-Busqueda investigator, Margarita Zamora, as she searches the countryside asking eyewitnesses to recall what they remember from war times. As Pyle and Rodriguez tell the personal account of Zamora’s search for her 4 siblings, so do they also tell the story of American Jaime Harvey, who was adopted from El Salvador in 1980, and Salvador Garcia, a farmer who continues the search for his daughter Cristabel. El Salvador Civil War
The Salvadoran Civil War ( es, guerra civil de El Salvador) was a twelve year period of civil war in El Salvador that was fought between the government of El Salvador and the Farabundo Martí National Liberation Front (FMLN), a coalition or "umbrella organization" of left-wing groups. A coup on 15 October 1979 followed by government killings of anti-coup protesters is widely seen as the start of civil war. The war did not formally end until 16 January 1992 with the signing of the Chapultepec Peace Accords in Mexico City. The United Nations (UN) reports that the war killed more than 75,000 people between 1979 and 1992, along with approximately 8,000 disappeared persons. Violations of the most basic human rights – particularly the kidnapping, torture, and murder of suspected FMLN sympathizers by state security forces and paramilitary death squads – were pervasive. Latino Public Broadcasting (LPB) is a non-profit organization that is funded by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting with the purpose of addressing issues of cultural significance to the Latino population in the United States. Women Make Movies
Women Make Movies is a non-profit feminist media arts organization based in New York City. Founded by Ariel Dougherty and Sheila Paige with Dolores Bargowski, WMM was first a feminist production collective that emerged from city-wide Women's Liberation meetings in September 1969. They produced four films by 1973. Dougherty and Paige incorporated the organization in March 1972 as a community based workshop to teach film to everyday women. A distribution service was also begun as an earned income program. In the mid-1970s a membership was created that screened and distributed members' work. In the early 1980s focus shifted to concentrate on distribution of independent films by and about women. WMM also provides production assistance to women filmmakers.
