Abkhazian Armed Forces
The Abkhazian Armed Forces (; ) are the military forces of Abkhazia. The forces were officially created on 12 October 1992, after the outbreak of the 1992–1993 war with Georgia. The basis of the armed forces was formed by the ethnic Abkhaz National Guard. The Abkhaz military is primarily a ground force but includes small sea and air units. According to the authorities of the Republic of Abkhazia, the Abkhazian Land Forces are organised along the Swiss model – in time of peace they have personnel of 3,000 to 5,000 and in case of war further 40–50,00045,000 according to the Problems of the unrecognised states in the former USSR: South Caucasus'' by David Petrosyan; 40,000–50,000 according to the ' article of the Nezavisimaya Gazeta reservists are called out. The office of Minister for Defence ( ab, атәыла хьчара аминистр, ka, თავდაცვის მინისტრი, russian: министр обороны) has been one of the most important in the breakaway Republic of Abkhazia due to the ongoing conflict with Georgia. The person in the position heads the Ministry of Defence of Abkhazia, which controls the Abkhazian Armed Forces. The position of president of Abkhazia was created in 1994. Before the office of president was created the head of state position was known as the chairman of Parliament between 1992 and the creation of the 1994 constitution. Before the position of Chairman of Parliament, the highest office in Abkhazia was the chairman of the Supreme Soviet. The post would last from the declaration of sovereignty from the Georgian Soviet Socialist Republic on 25 August 1990 until the outright declaration of independence on 23 July 1992. Sultan Aslambekovich Sosnaliyev (russian: Султан Асламбекович Сосналиев; 23 April 1942 – 23 November 2008) was a Soviet Army officer of Circassian ethnicity who served as a commander of Abkhaz and North Caucasian forces during the War in Abkhazia and as the defence minister of Abkhazia in 1993–1996 and 2005–2007. Early life Sultan Sosnaliyev was born in Baksan in Kabardino-Balkaria, Russia, to Kabardin parents. He graduated from the Syzran Higher Military Aviation School and from the Zhukov Air and Space Defense Academy and served in the Soviet anti-aircraft forces for 29 years. He retired in 1990 in the rank of a colonel and worked in Kabardino-Balkaria's construction industry till 1992. Sergei Dbar was a prominent military leader of Abkhazia. Dbar was born on 2 May 1946 in the village of Mgudzyrkhua in the Gudauta District. After a career in the Soviet Army, Dbar became one of Abkhazia's military leaders in the 1992-1993 war with Georgia. On 21 May 1993, he was appointed Chief of Staff and promoted to the rank of Major General. After the war, on 30 December 1993, he was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant General. Vladimir Georgievich Arshba (russian: Владимир Георгиевич Аршба; 8 May 1959 – 16 January 2018) was an Abkhaz soldier and politician who served as the first Minister of Defence of the Republic of Abkhazia, an unrecognised state, from 1992 until 1993. He held the rank of Lieutenant general in the Abkhazian Armed Forces. Career Arshba graduated from the Tbilisi Higher Artillery Command School in 1980 and served with the Soviet Army in East Germany. In 1988 he was transferred to the Armenian SSR, and helped in the aftermath of the 1988 Armenian earthquake. Vladislav Ardzinba ( ab, Владислав Арӡынба, ka, ვლადისლავ არძინბა; 14 May 1945 – 4 March 2010) was the first ''de facto'' President of Abkhazia. A historian by education, Ardzinba led Abkhazia to ''de facto'' independence in the 1992–1993 War with Georgia, but its ''de jure'' independence from Georgia remained internationally unrecognised during Ardzinba's two terms as President from 1994 to 2005.
