The Chief of the Defence Staff of Italy is the service head of the Italian Armed Forces. The current Chief of the Defence staff is Admiral Giuseppe Cavo Dragone. History The post was established in 1925 as Chief of the General Staff (''Capo di Stato Maggiore Generale''). From 1941 until 1945, it was ''Capo del Comando Supremo''. In 1947 it assumed its present name. Giuseppe Cavo Dragone
Admiral Giuseppe Cavo Dragone is an Italian naval officer, currently serving as Chief of the Defense Staff since 19 October 2021. Prior to his assumption, he served as the Chief of Staff of the Italian Navy from 21 June 2019 to 19 October 2021, and as commander of the Joint Operations Command, and the Joint Special Forces Operations Headquarters. Early life and education Dragone was born in Arquata Scrivia on 28 February 1957. He entered the Italian Naval Academy in Livorno in 1976 and graduated from his class in 1980. Dragone earned his Naval Aviator wings at the Naval Air Station Pensacola, Florida in 1989. Dragone returned to the US, where entered flight courses at the Naval Air Station Meridian, and in the Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, and became carrier qualified on the in January 1990. Claudio Trezzani
Claudio Trezzani (Savigliano, 22 March 1881 – Rome, 13 September 1955) was an Italian general during World War II, Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces of Italian East Africa. After the war he became the last Chief of General Staff of the Kingdom of Italy and the first Chief of the Defence Staff of the Italian Republic. Biography Trezzani was born in Savigliano, Piedmont, and joined the Royal Italian Army in his youth, enlisting in the Alpini corps. He participated in the Italo-Turkish War and in the First World War, serving as a staff officer in the later part of the war and earning a Silver Medal of Military Valour and a Knight's Cross of the Military Order of Savoy for his behaviour during the retreat that followed the battle of Caporetto and for his role in the battle of Vittorio Veneto. Eugenio Henke (1909-1990) was an admiral of the Italian Armed forces who served as the director of the Defense Information Service (SID) from July 1966 to October 1970.
