''Check it Out'' was a youth-oriented television series produced twice weekly by Tyne Tees Television for ITV from 1979 to 1982. It presented a mix of rock music performances and segments dealing with social issues including homelessness and homosexuality. ITV Tyne Tees, previously known as Tyne Tees, Channel 3 North East and Tyne Tees Television, is the ITV (TV network), ITV television franchise for North East England and parts of North Yorkshire. ''Top of the Pops'' (''TOTP'') is a British Record chart, music chart television programme, made by the BBC and originally broadcast weekly between 1January 1964 and 30 July 2006. The programme was the world's longest-running weekly music show. For most of its history, it was broadcast on Thursday evenings on BBC One. Each show consisted of performances of some of the week's best-selling popular music records, usually excluding any tracks moving down the chart, including a rundown of that week's singles chart. This was originally the Top 20, though this varied throughout the show's history. The Top 30 was used from 1969, and the Top 40 from 1984. Dusty Springfield's "I Only Want to Be with You" was the first song featured on ''TOTP'', while the Rolling Stones were the first band to perform, with "I Wanna Be Your Man". ''The Tube'' was a United Kingdom music television programme, which ran for five series, from 5 November 1982 to 24 April 1987. It was filmed in Newcastle upon Tyne and produced for Channel 4 by Tyne Tees Television, which had previously produced the similar music show '' Alright Now'' and the music-oriented youth show '' Check it Out'' for ITV; production of the latter ended in favour of ''The Tube''. Old Grey Whistle Test
''The Old Grey Whistle Test'' (sometimes abbreviated to ''Whistle Test'' or ''OGWT'') is a British television music show. The show was devised by BBC producer Rowan Ayers, commissioned by David Attenborough and aired on BBC Two, BBC2 from 1971 to 1988. It took over the BBC2 late-night slot from ''Disco 2 (TV series), Disco 2'', which ran between September 1970 and July 1971, while continuing to feature non-chart music. The original producer, involved in an executive capacity throughout the show's entire history, was Mike Appleton, Michael Appleton. According to presenter Bob Harris (radio presenter), Bob Harris, the programme derived its name from a Tin Pan Alley phrase from years before. ''Revolver'' is a British music TV series on ITV that ran for one series only, of eight episodes, in 1978. It was produced by ATV. The series producer was Mickie Most, who was inspired to make the programme after he saw an interview with ''Top of the Pops producer Robin Nash, in which he (Nash) boasted that ''TOTP'' was a music programme that the whole family could enjoy together. Most set out to make a show which was the antithesis of that, and which featured live music performances most closely related to the then emergent punk rock and new wave music scenes - though it also included other more mainstream artists such as Dire Straits and Lindisfarne as well as more original artists such as Kate Bush. Peter Cook played the manager of the fictional ballroom where the show was supposedly taking place, and frequently made disparaging remarks about the acts appearing. ITV is a British free-to-air public broadcast television network. It was launched in 1955 as Independent Television to provide competition to BBC Television (established in 1936). Chris Cowey
Chris Cowey (born c. 1961 in Sunderland) is a television producer specialising in music shows. He is best known for producing ''Top of the Pops'' from 1997 until 2003. Cowey co-presented the Tyne Tees television pop show ''All Right Now'' and spent several years as a DJ at Sunderland Mayfair (Mecca) in the late 1970s. He also produced the Channel 4 music show ''The White Room'' between 1995 and 1996 and worked on '' The Tube'' in Newcastle in the 1980s. He co-presented '' Check It Out'' 1979 to 1982 and was one of the interviewers of the notorious appearance of John Lydon (Johnny Rotten) when he walked off set, leaving Cowley shaken.
