John Creed Moore
John Creed Moore (February 28, 1824 – December 31, 1910) was a United States Army officer and a graduate of West Point. He is known for being a Confederate brigadier general during the Civil War and his works in the Texas educational system. Early life and career John Moore was born to Margaret Creed and Cleon Moore in 1824. Moore first went to Emory and Henry College and then graduated from West Point seventeenth in his class in 1849. He joined the infantry and was commissioned a second lieutenant. Shortly after graduating Moore fought in the Seminole War. He was then stationed in Santa Fe, New Mexico, from 1852 to 1853, and as first lieutenant at Fort Union from 1853 to 1854. Moore resigned from his commission in 1855. He then became a professor at Shelby College in Kentucky. 8th Mississippi Infantry Regiment
The 8th Mississippi Infantry Regiment was a unit of the Confederate States Army during the American Civil War. The 8th Regiment was composed of volunteer companies from Mississippi assembled in the fall of 1861. The Regiment fought in many battles of the Western theater of the American Civil War before surrendering in April 1865. History The companies of the 8th Mississippi Infantry assembled at Enterprise in August, 1861, initially enrolling for 12–months' service. The total original strength of the 8th Mississippi was 888 officers and men. The regiment was mustered into Confederate service in October and sent to Pensacola, Florida to join the Southern forces under General Braxton Bragg who were besieging the forts held by Federal forces there. 47th Georgia Volunteer Infantry
The 47th Georgia Infantry Regiment was an infantry regiment in the Confederate States Army during the American Civil War. History The regiment was first organized during the winter of 1861–1862 with men recruited from Mitchell, Randolph, Bulloch, Chatham, Screven, Tattnall, Appling, Bryan, Liberty, and Dodge counties. It was reorganized on May 12, 1862, when the 11th Battalion Georgia Infantry was merged into it. Until that time, the soldiers had spent most of their time guarding the Georgia coast. However, sometime in May, after the new 47th was organized, they were ordered to Charleston, South Carolina. 5th Georgia Volunteer Infantry
Served under John King Jackson's Brigade The 5th Georgia Volunteer Infantry was organized on May 11, 1861, and surrendered on April 26, 1865. They were formed from 10 Companies in 1861 to be first posted in Florida under General Bragg, where they received their training. Their first combat assignment was on Santa Rosa Island off the coast of Florida. The assault on the Island resulted in a victory and early experience for the regiment. Following this, the regiment was posted in early 1862 to Knoxville, Tennessee, and Corinth, Mississippi. They were ordered to move on Shiloh in April but arrived too late to participate in the battle. The regiment fought in and around Corinth until the end of May, when they were ordered to participate in the Invasion of Kentucky. Following that failure they were reassigned to battle in Murfreesboro.
