Charlottetown
Charlottetown is the capital and largest city of the Canadian province of Prince Edward Island, and the county seat of Queens County. Named after Queen Charlotte, Charlottetown was an unincorporated town until it was incorporated as a city in 1855. It was the site of the famous Charlottetown Conference in 1864, the first gathering of Canadian and Maritime statesmen to discuss the proposed Maritime Union. This conference led, instead, to the union of British North American colonies in 1867, which was the beginning of the Canadian confederation. PEI, however, did not join Confederation until 1873. From this, the city adopted as its motto ''Cunabula Foederis'', "Birthplace of Confederation". The population of Charlottetown is estimated to be 40,500 (2022); this forms the centre of a census agglomeration of 83,063 (2021), which is roughly half of the province's population (160,302). Charlottetown is a town in Labrador with a population of 292 ( 2021 census) in the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador. It was said to be founded by Benjamin Powell in 1950 and named for Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island: "I thought that maybe someday the place would be the capital of the bay, the same way Charlottetown is the capital of Prince Edward Island." Situated on the sheltered inlet St. Michaels Bay on the Labrador coast, Charlottetown was served by a coastal ferry service until the completion of the Trans-Labrador Highway in 2002 (now Route 514). There is also a small airstrip. Charlottetown provides a bridgehead and services to the remote community of Norman's Bay. Charlottetown (formerly Hillsborough) is a federal electoral district in Prince Edward Island, Canada, that has been represented in the House of Commons of Canada since 2004. The district, which includes the entire City of Charlottetown, has an area of 46 km2 and a population of 34,562 as of 2011. Hillsborough was formed in 1966 (from the old Queen's (Prince Edward Island electoral district). It elected its first MP in 1968. It was re=drawn and re-named Charlottetown in 2003. The Rodd Charlottetown is a historic hotel built in 1931 in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, Canada. History After Charlottetown's main hotel, the Victoria Hotel, was destroyed by fire in 1929, the business leaders of the town appealed to the Canadian National Railway to construct a replacement. The Charlottetown Hotel was constructed by the CNR (through their lodging division, Canadian National Hotels) and opened on April 14, 1931. Charlottetown Mall
Charlottetown Mall is a shopping mall located in North Carolina. The first enclosed shopping mall, it opened on October 28, 1959. Atlanta's Lenox Square opened two months earlier, but it was an open-air mall at first. The mall was situated on a parcel on the southeastern fringes of Charlotte's "center city" area. Rouse Company was the mall's developers. Stores and design The center featured one anchor store: Bon Marché, an Asheville, North Carolina-based department store with no connection to the Seattle-based retailer of the same name. Other major tenants included Colonial Stores supermarket, Rose's five and dime, Eckerd Drug and Milton's, a posh Ivy League haberdasher. The mall was mostly one-story, although the "Central Mall" (middle of the mall) featured a second level with an auditorium and an S&W Cafeteria. The Charlottetown Accord (french: Accord de Charlottetown) was a package of proposed amendments to the Constitution of Canada, proposed by the Canadian federal and provincial governments in 1992. It was submitted to a public referendum on October 26 and was defeated. Background The Statute of Westminster (1931) gave Canada legislative independence from the United Kingdom. Canada requested that the British North America Acts (the written portions of the Constitution of Canada) be exempted from the statute because the federal and provincial governments could not agree upon an amending formula for the acts. Charlottetown (soil Series)
Charlottetown soil series is the name given to a deep fine sandy loam soil which has developed under forest vegetation on glacial till. This series occurs only on Prince Edward Island, where it is widespread and so important for agriculture that it has been designated as the Provincial Soil. This soil is an Orthic Humo-Ferric Podzol in the Canadian soil classification system. It has good moisture-holding capacity and is well drained. It warms quickly in the spring; this is an important virtue in a region where spring comes late. It is easy to work and is not excessively stony. Few other Podzols, or other Prince Edward Island soils, have the same desirable traits as the Charlottetown. Like all Podzols, the Charlottetown is strongly acidic unless it is limed.
