Charles Leslie Stewart MM (12 July 1880 – 21 August 1957) was an Australian rules football player and World War I veteran. Football career Stewart played three matches for Carlton during the 1901 VFL season. He had come to Carlton from Essendon District. War service Stewart was a veteran of both Gallipoli and the Western Front. Australian football, also called Australian rules football or Aussie rules, or more simply football or footy, is a contact sport played between two teams of 18 players on an oval field, often a modified cricket ground. 1901 VFL Season
The 1901 VFL season was the fifth season of the Victorian Football League (VFL), the highest level senior Australian rules football competition in Victoria. The season featured eight clubs, ran from 4 May until 7 September, and comprised a 17-game home-and-away season followed by a finals series featuring the top four clubs. The premiership was won by the Essendon Football Club for the second time, after it defeated by 27 points in the 1901 VFL Grand Final. Western Front (World War I)
The Western Front was one of the main theatres of war during the First World War. Following the outbreak of war in August 1914, the German Army opened the Western Front by invading Luxembourg and Belgium, then gaining military control of important industrial regions in France. The German advance was halted with the Battle of the Marne. Following the Race to the Sea, both sides dug in along a meandering line of fortified trenches, stretching from the North Sea to the Swiss frontier with France, which changed little except during early 1917 and in 1918.
