Bergues
Bergues (; nl, Sint-Winoksbergen; vls, Bergn) is a commune in the Nord department in northern France. It is situated to the south of Dunkirk and from the Belgian border. Locally it is referred to as "the other Bruges in Flanders". Bergues is a setting for the 2008 movie ''Welcome to the Sticks'' (Original French title: ''Bienvenue chez les Ch'tis''). History The town's name derives from the Dutch ''groene berg'', which means "green hill". According to legend, St Winnoc, son of the Breton king, retired to Groenberg, a hill on the edge of the coastal marshes (see Marcae below). His establishment soon developed into a small monastery. In 882, when the Normans began their incursions, the Flanders count Baudouin II built primitive fortifications. Later, about 1022, count Baudouin IV built Saint-Winnoc church and interred the relics of St Winnoc there. This church formed the basis of an abbey. Gabriel de Lurieu (real name Gabriel-Zéphirin Gonyn de Lurieu; Paris, 28 October 1799 (7 brumaire year VIII) – Paris, 5 February 1889 ) was a French author and playwright. Eugène Scribe
Augustin Eugène Scribe (; 24 December 179120 February 1861) was a French dramatist and librettist. He is known for writing "well-made plays" ("pièces bien faites"), a mainstay of popular theatre for over 100 years, and as the librettist of many of the most successful grand operas and opéras-comiques. Born to a middle-class Parisian family, Scribe was intended for a legal career, but was drawn to the theatre, and began writing plays while still in his teens. His early years as a playwright were unsuccessful, but from 1815 onwards he prospered. Writing, usually with one or more collaborators, he produced several hundred stage works. He wrote to entertain the public rather than educate it. Many of his plays were written in a formulaic manner which aimed at neatness of plot and focus on dramatic incident rather than naturalism, depth of characterisation or intellectual substance. Édouard-Joseph-Ennemond Mazères (11 September 1796, Paris – 19 March 1866, Paris) was a 19th-century French playwright and librettist. Biography A son of a French colonist of Saint-Domingue, he studied in Paris then joined the army. Lieutenant of infantry, he resigned in 1820 to concentrate on literature. He became Charles X's lecturer but had to leave the post during the July Revolution. In 1832, he was raised to the position of sous-préfet of Saint-Denis, then prefect of Ariège (1835), Aveyron (1837), Haute-Saône (1839) and Cher (1847-1848). Emmanuel Théaulon
Marie-Emmanuel-Guillaume-Marguerite Théaulon de Lambert (14 August 1787, Aigues-Mortes – 16 November 1841) was a French playwright. A customs inspector, then an inspector of military hospitals, he composed an ''Ode'' on the birth of the King of Rome which brought him thanks from Napoleon himself. In 1814 he sang for the Bourbons and put on his first play, ''Les Clefs de Paris, ou le Dessert d’Henri IV'' (The Keys of Paris, or the Deservings of Henry IV), in their honour. In 1815, he composed and organised the posting of proclamations in honour of Louis XVIII. He collaborated on the royalist journals ''Le Nain rose'', ''La Foudre'', ''L’Apollon''.
