Charles Martin (Queensland Cricketer)
Charles Martin (15 May 1867 – 1942) was an Australian cricketer. He played in two first-class cricket, first-class matches for Queensland cricket team, Queensland between 1893 and 1894. He was regarded as one of the best batsmen in Queensland in the 1890s. Cricket career Martin began his cricket career in Ipswich, where he attended the West End Ipswich School, before moving to Brisbane and joining the Union Cricket Club in 1884. By 1885 he had returned to Ipswich and was playing for the West End Cricket Club and was awarded the club cup for best batting over the year, and he notably scored 96 out of a team total of 122 for West End in the 1884/85 season. By 1888 he was Captain of West End. In January 1892 an Ipswich paper described Martin as the most "brilliant star" of Ipswich cricket and speculated that if he was able to find form he would be the "most dashing" batsman in Queensland. Cricket
Cricket is a bat-and-ball game played between two teams of eleven players on a field at the centre of which is a pitch with a wicket at each end, each comprising two bails balanced on three stumps. The batting side scores runs by striking the ball bowled at one of the wickets with the bat and then running between the wickets, while the bowling and fielding side tries to prevent this (by preventing the ball from leaving the field, and getting the ball to either wicket) and dismiss each batter (so they are "out"). Means of dismissal include being bowled, when the ball hits the stumps and dislodges the bails, and by the fielding side either catching the ball after it is hit by the bat, but before it hits the ground, or hitting a wicket with the ball before a batter can cross the crease in front of the wicket. First-class Cricket
First-class cricket, along with List A cricket and Twenty20 cricket, is one of the highest-standard forms of cricket. A first-class match is one of three or more days' scheduled duration between two sides of eleven players each and is officially adjudged to be worthy of the status by virtue of the standard of the competing teams. Matches must allow for the teams to play two innings each, although in practice a team might play only one innings or none at all. The etymology of "first-class cricket" is unknown, but it was used loosely before it acquired official status in 1895, following a meeting of leading English clubs. At a meeting of the Imperial Cricket Conference (ICC) in 1947, it was formally defined on a global basis. Arthur Coningham (cricketer)
Arthur Coningham ( 14 July 1863 – 13 June 1939) was an Australian cricketer who played in one Ashes Test match at Melbourne in 1894 in which he took a wicket with his very first ball. He took 2 for 17 in England's first innings but failed to add to that tally in the second. Biography Coningham was born at Emerald Hill, Victoria in 1863. He was renowned as something of a joker. In an effort to stay warm while fielding in a tour match in 1893 at a frigid Blackpool he gathered straw and twigs and started a fire on the outfield. He found life difficult after he retired from the game, serving time in jail for fraud, and he died in an asylum. Coningham was involved in a famous scandal in 1899 when he sued his wife for divorce on the basis of her adultery with a Catholic priest, Fr Denis O'Haran, personal secretary to Cardinal Moran. Queensland Cricket, formerly known as the Queensland Cricket Association, is the governing body of Cricket in Queensland, Australia. Formed in 1876, it is directly responsible for the Queensland Bulls, Queensland Fire, Allan Border Field and Queensland Premier Cricket. William Hoare (cricketer, Born 1868)
William Hoare (23 October 1868 – 16 December 1954) was an Australian cricketer. He played fourteen first-class matches for Queensland from 1892–93 to 1902–03. Cricket career As of 1883 Hoare was playing for Unions cricket club in Brisbane. In 1884 he moved to Gregorys club, and in 1886 he played for Windsor club. In 1887 he played for a combined team representing the clubs competing in Brisbane Junior Cricket against a combined Dinmore and Goodna side. In 1888 he played for Nelson cricket club. By early 1890 he was playing for Pembroke cricket club in the Southern Queensland Cricket Union competition, but he moved to the South Brisbane Cricket Club later in the year.
