Charles Daniels (activist)
Charles Daniels was a Black Canadian working as a porter supervisor with the CPR at the beginning of the 20th century. In 1914, he launched a $1,000 discrimination lawsuit against the Sherman Grand theatre in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, when the management refused to honour his ticket for floor seating in the whites-only section to see a production of ''King Lear''. Charles Daniels was a civil rights activist that came to the Canadian prairies as part of the poorly documented wave of African-American settlers to Alberta during the early 20th century. His date and place of birth and death are unknown. Career and activism In 1914, Charles Daniels was known to be working for the CPR based out of Calgary as an inspector for porters and was part of a black union, the Brotherhood of the Sleeping Car Porters. Charles Daniels (New York Politician)
Charles Daniels (March 24, 1825 in New York City – December 20, 1897 in Buffalo, Erie County, New York, United States was an American lawyer and politician. Life He was taken to Toledo, Ohio at an early age, and learned his father’s trade of shoemaker. In 1842, he moved to Buffalo, New York, where he studied law. In 1847, he was admitted to the bar and commenced practice in Buffalo. In 1863, he was appointed by Governor Horatio Seymour a justice of the New York Supreme Court, to fill the vacancy caused by the death of James J. Hoyt. Later that year, he was elected to the remainder of Hoyt's term, then re-elected to an eight-year term in 1869, and re-elected to a fourteen-year term in 1877, remaining on the bench until the end of 1891, when his term expired. In 1869, he was ex officio a judge of the New York Court of Appeals. In 1878, he married Mrs. Mary E. Enos. Charles Daniels (swimmer)
Charles Meldrum Daniels (March 24, 1885 – August 9, 1973) was an American competition swimmer, eight-time Olympic medalist, and world record-holder in two freestyle swimming events. Daniels was an innovator of the front crawl swimming style, inventing the " American crawl". Daniels began his swimming career with the New York Athletic Club in 1903. At the 1904 Olympics in St. Louis, Missouri, Daniels became the first American to win an Olympic medal, winning gold medals in both the 220- and 440-yard freestyle races. Four years later, at the 1908 Olympics in London, Daniels won gold in the 100-meter freestyle. Daniels was inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame as an "Honor Swimmer" in 1965. Charles Daniels is an English tenor, particularly noted for his performances of baroque music. He is a frequent soloist with The King's Consort, and has made over 25 recordings with the ensemble on the Hyperion label. Biography Born 1960 in Salisbury, Daniels attended the choir school at King's College, Cambridge where he was a chorister, then Winchester College for his secondary education. He returned to King's College for his university education, where he was a choral scholar, reading Natural Sciences and Music. After taking his degree, he studied under Edward Brooks at the Royal College of Music in London where he was awarded a Foundation Scholarship. His concert and recording repertoire extends from the Middle Ages to 20th-century composers such as Luigi Nono and Benjamin Britten. In December 2001, he was the tenor soloist in a performance of Wojciech Kilar's ''Missa pro pace'', performed in the Vatican in the presence of Pope John Paul II. The F/V ''Charles W'', also known as Annie J Larsen, is a historic fishing schooner anchored in Petersburg, Alaska. At the time of its retirement in 2000, it was the oldest fishing vessel in the fishing fleet of Southeast Alaska, and the only known wooden fishing vessel in the entire state still in active service. Launched in 1907, she was first used in the halibut fisheries of Puget Sound and the Bering Sea as the ''Annie J Larsen''. In 1925 she was purchased by the Alaska Glacier Seafood Company, refitted for shrimp trawling, and renamed ''Charles W'' in honor of owner Karl Sifferman's father. The company was one of the pioneers of the local shrimp fishery, a business it began to phase out due to increasing competition in the 1970s. The ''Charles W'' was the last of the company's fleet of ships, which numbered twelve at its height. The boat was acquired in 2002 by the nonprofit Friends of the ''Charles W''. Charles Wilberforce Daniels FRCP (1862–1927) was a British physician and pioneer of tropical medicine, known for his confirmation of Ronald Ross's 1898 discovery of the role of mosquito-vectored malarial parasites in avian malaria. After education at Manchester Grammar School, Charles Daniels received a B.A. degree from Trinity College, Cambridge in 1883. After training at the London Hospital he received his M.B. in 1886. After medical residency at the London Hospital and Queen Charlotte's Lying-in Hospital, in 1890 he joined the Colonial Medical Service. After four years of original investigation in the Fijian Islands, he went to British Guiana and investigated filariasis. In 1899 Sir Patrick Manson sent him to Calcutta to investigate malaria. Daniels then went to Nyasaland to investigate blackwater fever. Returning to England in 1900, he became in 1901 the director of the London School of Tropical Medicine.
