Charles Bruce, 3rd Earl Of Ailesbury
Charles Bruce, 3rd Earl of Ailesbury (later styled Aylesbury) and 4th Earl of Elgin (29 May 1682 – 10 February 1747), of Ampthill, Bedfordshire and Savernake Park, Wiltshire, styled Viscount Bruce of Ampthill from 1685 to 1741, was a British landowner and Tory politician who sat in the English and British House of Commons from 1705 until 1711 when he was raised to the peerage as one of Harley's Dozen and sat in the House of Lords. Background Bruce was the son of Thomas Bruce, 2nd Earl of Ailesbury and his first wife Lady Elizabeth Seymour, daughter of Henry Seymour, Lord Beauchamp and Mary Capell. His father was arrested for treason in 1696 and confined to the Tower of London, and his mother died in premature childbirth in 1697, a death probably brought on by a false report that his father had been executed. Charles Edward Rhodes Bruce (C.E.R. Bruce) (19 Apr 1902 in Shettleston – 30 Dec 1979) was a Scottish electrical engineer and amateur astrophysicist. Education and career Bruce was the son of a tailor. His family moved soon after his birth from Glasgow to Newport-on-Tay, where he went to primary school. At the age of 14, he went to Dundee to be educated at the High School of Dundee. He then matriculated at the University of Edinburgh where he graduated MA and BSc in 1924 with First Class Honours in Mathematics and Natural Philosophy. He then started training at the Moray House Teachers Training College, and was offered teaching positions at the High School of Dundee and Daniel Stewart's College, where he had carried out his practical teacher training; instead, he joined the Electrical Research Association (now ERA Technology Ltd) in Leatherhead, England, on the recommendation of his former professor, E. Charles Alexander Bruce
Charles Alexander Bruce (11 January 1793 – 23 April 1871) was a British naval and gunboat officer, explorer and author. He is known as the father of the tea industry in Assam. Life Bruce was born at Jorhat in Assam. In 1809 he was a midshipman on the Indiaman ''Windham'', sailing from England to India. The vessel was captured by French forces, twice, in the Indian Ocean, and he was taken to Mauritius. There he was imprisoned on a ship, until the British invasion of 1810. He served as an officer on a British troop ship in the invasion of Java (1811). In India, he worked initially as a naval officer of the East India Company. Bruce's brother Robert brought to notice the indigenous Assamese tea plant in 1823 and told Charles of its existence. In 1824, Bruce served in the First Anglo-Burmese War, during which he was posted to Sadiya and made commander of a division of gunboats. Charles Andrew Bruce (1768–1810) was briefly Governor of Prince of Wales Island (now called Penang) from March 24, 1810, until his death in office in December 1810. He is buried at the Old Protestant Cemetery, George Town, Penang, now in present-day Malaysia. Bruce was one of the sons of Charles Bruce, 5th Earl of Elgin and Martha Bruce, Countess of Elgin and Kincardine (1739–1810) and a brother of the collector Thomas Bruce, 7th Earl of Elgin. Lieutenant-Colonel Charles Edward Bruce (23 March 1876 – 26 January 1950) was a British Indian Army officer and British colonial administrator. He served as the Chief Commissioner of Baluchistan in the 1920s. Biography Bruce was born in India, the son of Richard Isaac Bruce of the Indian Civil Service. He was educated in England at Wellington College and the Royal Military College, Sandhurst. From Sandhurst, he was commissioned into the Lancashire Fusiliers and within the year was transferred to the 24th Baluchistan Regiment. He took part in the Boxer Rebellion in China and also some frontier wars of the North-Western Frontier. Bruce then joined the Political Department, where he became a devoted follower of the policies of Sir Robert Groves Sandeman. Charles Morelle Bruce (July 6, 1853June 7, 1938) was an American businessman and politician who served as Secretary of Arizona Territory from 1893 till 1897 and as Assistant Commissioner of the General Land Office from 1913 to 1921. Charles Christian Cameron "Nish" Bruce, (8 August 1956 – 8 January 2002) was a British Army soldier. Bruce served with the British Army's Parachute Regiment and Special Air Service. He deployed during the Falklands War and as part of Operation Banner to Northern Ireland in the early 1980s, where he was awarded the Queen's Gallantry Medal.
