Charles-Mathias Simons
Charles-''Mathias'' Simons (27 March 1802 Р5 October 1874)Thewes (2011), p. 27 was a Luxembourg politician and jurist. He was the third Prime Minister of Luxembourg, serving for seven years, from 1853 until 1860. He received his Doctorate of Laws in 1823 from the University of Li̬ge. The year after, he registered at the bar of the court of first instance of Diekirch. In 1831 he was a delegate for Diekirch at the Belgian National Congress in Brussels, and helped to draft the new Belgian constitution. In 1836-1837 he was a member of the provincial council, and in 1841 became a member of the Assembly of Estates. In 1843-1848 he was a member of the cabinet and in 1848 of the Constituent Assembly. From 1 August to 2 December 1848 he became Administrator-general of communal affairs in the de la Fontaine Ministry. François-Xavier Wurth-Paquet
François-Xavier Wurth-Paquet (16 April 1801 – 4 February 1885) was a Luxembourgian politician, jurist, and archaeologist. Born in Luxembourg City, he studied law in Liège and then became a lawyer, judge, prosecutor and in 1848 president of the Superior Court. From 1845 to 1848 he was a member of the Assembly of Estates. He was elected to represent the canton of Esch-sur-Alzette on the Constituent Assembly, in 1848. An Orangist, he served in the cabinet of Charles-Mathias Simons as Administrator-General for Justice from 1853 to 1856, and as Administrator-General for the Interior from 1856 to 1858. President Of The Council Of State Of Luxembourg
The president of the Council of State is the leader of Luxembourg's Council of State. The president is appointed by the grand duke, along with two vice presidents, and the appointment lasts for one year (although it can be renewed). The president of the Council of State must be either a member of the Council of State or the grand duke himself. However, to date, the latter option has never been taken, and it has become convention that the grand duke cannot be the president. Note that the position has often been left vacant, so few of the successions were immediate. Gaspard-Théodore-Ignace de la Fontaine (6 January 1787 – 11 February 1871)Thewes (2011), p. 15 was a Luxembourgish politician and jurist. He led the Orangist movement and was the first Prime Minister of Luxembourg, serving for four months, from 1 August 1848 until 6 December of the same year. From 1807 to 1810 he studied law in Paris and in the same year became a lawyer in Luxembourg City. In 1816 he became a member of the ''États provinciaux''. When the Belgian Revolution broke out, he supported William I, and was appointed to the government commission that controlled Luxembourg City. From 1841 to 1848 he was the governor of the Grand-Duchy. On 1 August 1848 he became the first head of government of Luxembourg and was also responsible for the areas of foreign affairs, justice, and culture. The government fell on 2 December 1849. Simons Ministry
The Simons Ministry was in office in Luxembourg from 23 September 1853 to 26 September 1860. Initially it just consisted of three members of the government, to which two more were added on 23 September 1854. It was reshuffled on 24 June 1856, and again on 2 June 1857, when Paul de Scherff was placed in charge of railways, and Guillaume-Mathias Augustin took over his portfolio of Public Works. On 29 November 1857 there was a third reshuffle, and a fourth on 12 November 1858. From 23 June to 15 July 1859 Mathias Simons and Jean Ulveling were the only members of the government, after which Édouard Thilges was added again.
