The Chair of the People's Party for Freedom and Democracy is the party chair, chief administrator and manager of the People's Party for Freedom and Democracy ( nl, Volkspartij voor Vrijheid en Democratie, VVD) in the Netherlands. The current chair is Christianne van der Wal, in office since 25 November 2017. Vice Chairman Eric Wetzels is in office since 20 May 2017. History The VVD Chair is the head of the party board and leads several committees. The duties of the Chair are typically concerned with the party membership as a whole, and the activities of the party organization, the internal party governance, its finances and the Telders Foundation think tank. The Chair plays an important role in strategies to recruit and retain members, in campaign fundraising. Due to a separation of power in the People's Party for Freedom and Democracy's structure the Chair is relatively weak and merely controls the party organization. Onno Hoes
Onno Hoes (born 5 June 1961) is a Dutch politician of the People's Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD) and businessman. He was the acting Mayor of Haarlemmermeer from 28 November 2017 till 10 July 2019 He was Mayor of Maastricht from 1 November 2010 till 30 June 2015. From 11 March 2010 till 12 October 2014 he was also Chairman of the Dutch Center Information and Documentation Israel. Before becoming mayor of Maastricht Hoes has held several political positions. From 1992 to 2003 he was a member of the provincial parliament of North Brabant, from 1993 to 1998 he was also a member of the municipal council of 's-Hertogenbosch, and from 2001 to 2010 he was a member of the provincial executive of North Brabant, dealing with different subjects like economic development, international relations and ecology. Hans Wiegel
Hans Wiegel (; born 16 July 1941) is a retired Dutch politician of the People's Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD) and businessperson. Wiegel studied Law at the University of Amsterdam before switching to Political science obtaining a Bachelor of Social Science degree and worked as a freelance political pundit from July 1965 until April 1967. Wiegel also served as Chairman of the political youth organisation JOVD from November 1965 until October 1966. Wiegel became a Member of the House of Representatives shortly after election of 1967 taking office on 18 April 1967 serving as a frontbencher and spokesperson for Local Government Affairs. Molly Geertsema
Willem Jacob "Molly" Geertsema II (; 18 October 1918 – 27 June 1991) was a Dutch politician of the People's Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD) and jurist. Geertsema attended a Gymnasium in The Hague from June 1930 until June 1937 and applied at the Leiden University in June 1937 majoring in Law and obtaining an Bachelor of Laws degree in June 1939. On 10 May 1940 Nazi Germany invaded the Netherlands and the government fled to London to escape the German occupation. During the German occupation Geertsema continued his study but in November 1940 the German occupation authority closed the Leiden University. Geertsema worked as a civil servant for the municipality of Oegstgeest from December 1940 until December 1944. Haya Van Someren
Haya Victoria van Someren-Downer (born Gerarda Victoria Downer; 5 July 1926 – 12 November 1980) was a Dutch politician of the People's Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD) and journalist. She was a Member of the House of Representatives from 20 March 1959 until 1 October 1968. She was the People's Party for Freedom and Democracy party chair from 29 March 1969 until 15 March 1975. She became a Member of the Senate on 17 September 1974 and on 5 June 1976 she succeeded Harm van Riel as the Parliamentary leader of the People's Party for Freedom and Democracy in the Senate after he retired. Edzo Toxopeus
Edzo Hendrik Toxopeus (19 February 1918 – 23 August 2009) was a Dutch politician and diplomat of the People's Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD) and jurist. Toxopeus studied Law at the Utrecht University obtaining a Master of Laws degree. Toxopeus worked as a paralegal in Breda from July 1942 until October 1944 and worked as a military lawyer in the Royal Netherlands Army from November 1944 until August 1945. Toxopeus worked as a criminal defense lawyer in Breda from August 1945 until May 1959. The Minister of State ( nl, Minister van Staat) is an honorary title in the Netherlands. The title is formally granted together with the style Excellency, by the Monarch, but on the initiative of the cabinet of the Netherlands. It is given on a personal basis, for life rather than for a specified period. The title is granted for exceptional merits, generally to senior politicians at the end of their party career.
