The Chairman's Stakes is a South Australian Jockey Club Group 3 Thoroughbred horse race for three-year-olds, at set weights, over a distance of 2,000 metres at the Morphettville Racecourse, Adelaide, Australia in the Autumn Carnival. History The race is considered a prep lead-up race for the Group 1 South Australian Derby which is usually run a couple of weeks after this race at the same track. The Thoroughbred is a horse breed best known for its use in horse racing. Although the word ''thoroughbred'' is sometimes used to refer to any breed of purebred horse, it technically refers only to the Thoroughbred breed. South Australian Jockey Club is the principal race club in South Australia. First racing events The first horse racing events in South Australia took place at a well-attended picnic meeting held over 1 and 2 January 1838. South Australian Derby
The South Australian Derby is a South Australian Jockey Club Group 1 Thoroughbred horse race for three-year-olds, at set weights, run over a distance of 2,500 metres at Morphettville Racecourse in Adelaide, Australia during the SAJC Autumn Carnival. History The inaugural running of the race was on 5 January 1860 at Thebarton Racecourse which is located today in Mile End. The race was called The Thebarton Derby and had stakes of 100 sovereigns with an additional sweep of 10 sovereigns with a forfeit of 2 sovereigns. The race was won by the famous colonial pastoralist C.B. Fisher's, four-year-old mare Midnight who carried 8 stone 10 pounds and ridden by jockey Simpson in a time of 2:54. Victoria Park Racecourse
Victoria Park / Pakapakanthi, also known as Park 16, is a park located in the Southeastern Park Lands of the South Australian capital of Adelaide. It is bordered by Fullarton Road, Greenhill Road, East Terrace and Wakefield Road. Cheltenham Park Racecourse
Cheltenham Park Racecourse was a horse racing track located in the suburb of Cheltenham in Adelaide, South Australia, between around 1921 and 2008. History The Port Adelaide Racing Club began thoroughbred racing at the course and in 1921 the club bought the site on which the course stands for £25,000. Administration of the course was taken over by the South Australian Jockey Club in 1975. The racecourse was also once served by now-demolished Cheltenham Racecourse railway station on the Outer Harbor railway line. In November 2007, the SAJC sold the racecourse land for A$85 million for a new housing development. It was proposed that the proceeds of the sale be used to help fund the Victoria Park Racecourse redevelopment. Rebel Raider
Rebel Raider was a notable Australian Thoroughbred race horse. A son of Reset (AUS) from the mare Picholine (AUS), he was foaled in 2005 and was trained throughout his career by Leon Macdonald. Racing record Rebel Raider was the longest priced winner (100/1) in the history of the Victoria Derby and the first winner ridden by a female jockey, Clare Lindop. However, his long-price in the Derby belied his ability as he also recorded wins in the 2009 South Australian Derby, 2009 Chairman's Stakes and the 2010 Spring Stakes.
