Centre For Renaissance And Early Modern Studies
The Centre for Renaissance and Early Modern Studies (CREMS) was launched in October 2005 at the University of York. It is focused on the study of the 16th and 17th centuries. It brings together more than 40 academics and 60 postgraduate students from seven leading departments at York: English and Related Literature, History, History of Art, Archaeology, Music, Philosophy and Politics, Education, and Theatre, Film, Television and Interactive Media making it one of the largest centres of its kind in the UK. It is based at the university's Humanities Research Centre, which is located inside the Berrick Saul Building. The centre offers an annual programme of seminars, conferences and public lectures relating to the Renaissance and Early Modern periods. It runs its own taught MA in Renaissance and Early Modern Studies for students taking postgraduate research degrees within the period. Borthwick Institute For Archives
The Borthwick Institute for Archives is the specialist archive service of the University of York, York, England. It is one of the biggest archive repositories outside London. The Borthwick was founded in 1953 as The Borthwick Institute of Historical Research. It was originally based at St Anthony's Hall, a fifteenth-century guild hall on Peasholme Green, in central York. Since 2005 it has been based in a purpose-built building, situated adjacent to the JB Morrell Library on the University of York's Heslington West campus. This new building was made possible due to a grant of £4.4 million by the Heritage Lottery Fund and designed by Leach Rhodes Walker and Buro Happold. National Centre For Early Music
The National Centre for Early Music (NCEM) is organisation encourages, promotes and disseminates early music. Located in York, England, it is based in the converted and extended, Grade I listed medieval church of St Margaret, Walmgate. Each year, the NCEM organises the York Early Music Festival. Overview Designed by van Heyningen and Haward Architects, the centre was opened in April 2000. It was created, with the aid of a grant from the National Lottery and partnership money from organisations such as English Heritage. The buildings of the Centre include a performance space (in the former church) and facilities for conferences and other events and recordings. Historic keyboard instruments are available for hire.
