Central Building () is a building located at 1–3 Pedder Street, at the corner of Queen's Road Central, in Central, Hong Kong. History The location was previously occupied by the Hong Kong Hotel. In 1957, under the ownership of Central Development Limited (), the former hotel building was renovated and rebuilt. In 1958, it was completed as Central Building. The original stock certificates of Central Development Limited bore the signature of lead investor Kwan Fan-Fat (), owner of Golden Dahlia (), the 1949 Hong Kong Derby winner). The commemorative marble foundation stone of Central Building was dedicated by its chairman Hui Oi-Chow () on 29 August 1957. Mr. Hui was the patriarch of the Hui family, one of the Four big families of Hong Kong. Hui Oi-Chow
The Hui people ( zh, c=, p=Huízú, w=Hui2-tsu2, Xiao'erjing: , dng, Хуэйзў, ) are an East Asian ethnoreligious group predominantly composed of Chinese-speaking adherents of Islam. They are distributed throughout China, mainly in the northwestern provinces and in the Zhongyuan region. According to the 2011 census, China is home to approximately 10.5 million Hui people. The 110,000 Dungan people of Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan are also considered part of the Hui ethnicity. The Hui have a distinct connection with Islamic culture. For example, they follow Islamic dietary laws and reject the consumption of pork, the most commonly consumed meat in China, and have developed their own variation of Chinese cuisine. They also dress differently than the Han Chinese, some men wear white caps (taqiyah) and some women wear headscarves, as is the case in many Islamic cultures. Entertainment Building () is an office building in Central, Hong Kong Island, Hong Kong. The neo-gothic architecture and height of the building make it distinctive amongst the office buildings nearby. The building stands at 30 Queen's Road Central and occupies an area of between Wyndham Street and D'Aguilar Street. It faces the Aon China Building () and overviews Pedder Street. It has a total gross floor area of . History Completed in 1846, the first building on the site was the first generation of the Hong Kong Club. After the club moved to its current location at 1 Jackson Road in 1897, the building turned into commercial use, the largest tenant was Yee Sang Fat. Wheelock House () is a commercial office building located on Pedder Street in Central, Hong Kong. Wheelock House is a Class A office space completed in 1984 and has 24 storeys. One of its architects was Wong & Ouyang (HK) Ltd while the real estate developer was Cheung Kong Holdings. History Wheelock House was built on the site where once stood three previous generations of Jardine House, the headquarters of Jardine, Matheson & Co. Queen's Road, Hong Kong
Queen's Road is a collection of roads along the northern coast of Hong Kong Island, in Hong Kong, within the limit of Victoria City. It was the first road in Hong Kong, constructed by the British between 1841 and 1843, spanning across Victoria City from Shek Tong Tsui to Wan Chai. At various points along the route, Queen's Road marks the original shoreline before land reclamation projects permanently extended land into Victoria Harbour. Landmark is a commercial complex owned by Hongkong Land in Central, Hong Kong. It consists of three office towers: Gloucester Tower, Edinburgh Tower and York House. Its retail podium, Landmark Atrium, forms the core component of the LANDMARK shopping mall. The Hong Kong Derby is a Hong Kong Thoroughbred horse race held annually since 1873. Restricted to horses four-years-old only since 1981, the race is run in mid-March and is the premier event on the domestic racing programme with a purse of HK$18 million (app. US$2.3 million). This race is the last race in the Hong Kong Four-Year-Old Classic Series. The first Hong Kong Derby was raced at Happy Valley Racecourse but in 1979 was transferred permanently to its present location at Sha Tin Racecourse. The Hongkong Hotel was Hong Kong's first luxury hotel modelled after sumptuous London hotels. It opened on Queen's Road and Pedder Street in 1868, later expanding into the Victoria Harbour waterfront of Victoria City in 1893. History The original hotel stood roughly on the site of the present Central Building at Queen's Road Central and Pedder Street. It was owned by The Hongkong Hotel Company, which later became The Hongkong and Shanghai Hotels, Limited, current owner of The Peninsula Hotels chain.
