Celeste De Luna
Celeste De Luna (born 1974) is an American Chicana visual artist, printmaker, and educator. She identifies as self-taught and is known for large-scale woodcut prints and fabric installations, focusing on capturing personal and collective experiences. Biography De Luna lived in Illinois in her early life, and was raised in the lower Rio Grande Valley of South Texas. She is a second generation Tejana. In Texas, De Luna developed a deep connection to the cultural tapestry of the region. Her upbringing influenced her artistic vision, prompting her to explore themes related to life along the borderlands, identity, and migration in her work. She graduated from the University of Texas–Pan American where she received her Master of Fine Arts (MFA) degree. She teaches art at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley in Brownsville. Chicana Art
Chicana art emerged as part of the Chicano Movement in the 1960s. It used art to express political and social resistance through different art mediums. Chicana artists explore and interrogate traditional Mexican-American values and embody feminist themes through different mediums such as murals, painting, and photography. The momentum created from the Chicano Movement spurred a ''Chicano Renaissance'' among Chicanas and Chicanos. Artists voiced their concerns about opression and empowerment in all areas of race, gender, class, and sexuality. Chicano Art
The Chicano Art Movement represents groundbreaking movements by Mexican-American artists to establish a unique artistic identity in the United States. Much of the art and the artists creating Chicano Art were heavily influenced by Chicano Movement (El Movimiento) which began in the 1960s. Chicano art was influenced by post- Mexican Revolution ideologies, pre-Columbian art, European painting techniques and Mexican-American social, political and cultural issues. Printmaking
Printmaking is the process of creating artworks by printing, normally on paper, but also on fabric, wood, metal, and other surfaces. "Traditional printmaking" normally covers only the process of creating prints using a hand processed technique, rather than a photographic reproduction of a visual artwork which would be printed using an electronic machine ( a printer); however, there is some cross-over between traditional and digital printmaking, including risograph.
