''Celebration'' is a live album by pianist Irène Schweizer and drummer Hamid Drake. It was recorded on July 26, 2019, at Konfrontationen Nickelsdorf, 40th Festival for Free and Improvised Music, held at Jazzgallery Nickelsdorf, Austria, and was released in 2021 by Intakt Records on the occasion of Schweizer's 80th birthday. Reception In a review for '' All About Jazz'', Troy Dostert called ''Celebration'' "a more-than-worthy addition to Schweizer's formidable series of matchups with top-shelf drummers," and wrote: "It's a delight to hear these two on stage together, and it's evident that they're enjoying themselves immensely as well." Irène Schweizer
Irène Schweizer (born 2 June 1941) is a Swiss jazz and free improvising pianist. She was born in Schaffhausen, Switzerland. She has performed and recorded numerous solo piano performances as well as performing as part of the Feminist Improvising Group, whose members include Lindsay Cooper, Maggie Nichols, Georgie Born and Sally Potter. She has also performed a series of duets with drummers Pierre Favre, Louis Moholo, Andrew Cyrille, Günter Sommer, Han Bennink, Hamid Drake, as well as in trio and quartet sessions with others, including John Tchicai, Evan Parker and Peter Kowald. With Yusef Lateef, Uli Trepte and Mani Neumeier, she performed at the Montreux Jazz Festival in 1967. One of her most enduring collaborations is with the improvising musician . Hamid Drake
Hamid Drake (born August 3, 1955) is an American jazz drummer and percussionist. By the close of the 1990s, Hamid Drake was widely regarded as one of the best percussionists in jazz and improvised music. Incorporating Afro-Cuban, Indian, and African percussion instruments and influence, in addition to using the standard trap set, Drake has collaborated extensively with top free jazz improvisers. Drake also has performed world music; by the late 1970s, he was a member of Foday Musa Suso's Mandingo Griot Society and has played reggae throughout his career. Drake has worked with trumpeter Don Cherry, pianist Herbie Hancock, saxophonists Pharoah Sanders, Fred Anderson, Archie Shepp and David Murray and bassists Reggie Workman and William Parker (in many lineups) He studied drums extensively, including eastern and Caribbean styles. Free improvisation or free music is improvised music without any rules beyond the logic or inclination of the musician(s) involved. The term can refer to both a technique (employed by any musician in any genre) and as a recognizable genre in its own right.
