Ceinture 81 To 93
Ceinture 81 to 93 were a class of thirteen 4-6-4T ("''Baltic''") tank locomotives designed by Gaston du Bousquet of the Chemins de fer du Nord for the ''Syndicat d'Exploitation des Chemins de fer de Ceinture de Paris''. They were almost identical to the 3.801 to 3.865, series that the Nord had built for itself in its own workshops at ( fr) and Hellemmes. The Ceinture locomotives were built in 1909 by Société française de constructions mécaniques. Six locomotives were fitted with superheaters between 1924 and 1928; Number 85 has a 21-element superheater, the remaining five, 81, 82, 84, 86, and 93, has 24-element superheaters. In addition 85 received Caprotti rotary-cam valve gear. Eleven locomotives received feedwater heaters: eight, 81 and 85 to 91, were by ACFI; three 83, 84 and 93 were by Caille Potonie. Gaston Du Bousquet
Gaston du Bousquet (1839–1910) was a French engineer who was Chief of Motive Power () of the Chemin de Fer du Nord, designer of locomotives and professor at École centrale de Lille. Steam locomotive designer Gaston du Bousquet taught mechanical engineering at the Institut industriel du Nord de la France (École Centrale de Lille) from 1872. He was appointed chief engineer to the Chemins de Fer du Nord in 1890. He won a gold medal at the Universal Exhibition of 1894. He collaborated successfully with Alfred de Glehn and Edward Beugniot, both working for the Société Alsacienne de Constructions Mécaniques (SACM). He was president of the Society of Civil Engineers of France in 1894. Caprotti Valve Gear
The Caprotti valve gear is a type of steam engine valve gear invented in the early 1920s by Italian architect and engineer Arturo Caprotti. It uses camshafts and poppet valves rather than the piston valves used in other valve gear. While basing his design on automotive valves, Caprotti made several significant departures from this design to adapt the valves for steam. Having agreed a joint-venture with Worcester-based engineering company Heenan & Froude from 1938, Heenan & Froude fully acquired Caprotti post-World War II in 1947. Usage in Italy The Caprotti valve gear was first tested on a Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane Class 740 2-8-0 mixed-traffic locomotive in 1921; although more expensive and complicated than the standard piston valves, it substantially improved the locomotive's performance.
