Cecil Burgess (politician)
Cecil Valentine Burgess is a South African politician and lawyer who served in the National Assembly from 2004 to 2014. He represented the Independent Democrats (ID) until September 2005, when he crossed the floor to the African National Congress (ANC). Burgess chaired Parliament's Joint Standing Committee on Intelligence from 2008 to 2014. When he left the National Assembly after the 2014 general election, the ANC nominated him for appointment as Inspector-General of Intelligence. The nomination was fiercely resisted by opposition parties and his nomination was abandoned in 2016 after it repeatedly failed to garner the required two-thirds majority in the house. The State Security Agency is the department of the South African government with overall responsibility for civilian intelligence operations. It was created in October 2009 to incorporate the formerly separate National Intelligence Agency, South African Secret Service, South African National Academy of Intelligence, National Communications Centre and COMSEC (South Africa). The private residence of former South African President Jacob Zuma is situated about south of the rural town of Nkandla in KwaZulu-Natal and is commonly referred to as the Nkandla homestead.
