Cawthra Family
The Cawthra family of Toronto was famous for its business, social and cultural contributions to the city. It is one of the oldest families in Toronto, and many descendants of the family's founder, Joseph Cawthra, continue to play significant roles in Toronto society. History Joseph Cawthra migrated to Canada from Yorkshire in 1803. In 1809, he acquired a large parcel of land along the Ontario lakeshore and the Credit River, near the present-day Port Credit. The narrow dirt road that cut through his property is now the Cawthra Road in Mississauga. Sometime later, the Cawthra family moved to the Town of York, where William Cawthra acquired several properties. One such property on Lot 19 Concession 3 on Yonge Street would later become Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Toronto. Mabel Cawthra Adamson
Mabel Cawthra Adamson (1871–1943) was a Canadian painter and decorator, who was active in the Arts and Crafts movement in Toronto. Early years Mabel Cawthra was born in Lucerne, Switzerland, in 1871. The Cawthra family were wealthy Canadian merchants, described by her son Anthony Adamson as the "Astors of Upper Canada". They owned a huge amount of property in the western part of Toronto. She attended the Victorian Era Ball on 28 December 1897 hosted by the Governor General and the Countess of Aberdeen at the new Militia Armory in Toronto. The ball celebrated Queen Victoria's diamond jubiliee, and proceeds went to the Victorian Order of Nurses. Mabel dressed as Madame Recamier, as depicted in a portrait by Jacques-Louis David. She married Agar Adamson, also from a patrician Upper Canada family, on 15 November 1899. Anthony Patrick Cawthra Adamson
Anthony Patrick Cawthra Adamson, (October 7, 1906 – May 3, 2002) was a Canadian architect, author, teacher, and municipal politician. He was a descendant of Joseph Cawthra through his mother. Born in Toronto, Ontario to Colonel Agar Adamson and Mabel Cawthra, he grew up in Port Credit, Ontario on the family estate, before reading Architecture at the University of Cambridge and at the University of London. Adamson was an architect, architectural planner, and an Associate Professor of Town Planning at the University of Toronto from 1950 to 1967. From 1953 to 1954, he was the Reeve of Toronto Township (now called Mississauga). He was the consultant and designer of Upper Canada Village, which opened in 1961. From 1969 to 1974, he was Chairman of the Ontario Arts Council. He wrote the introduction to Richard Bebout's 1972 book, "The Open Gate: Toronto Union Station," which was instrumental in helping to save the station from the wrecking ball. Agar Rodney Adamson
Agar Rodney Adamson (November 8, 1901 – April 8, 1954) was a Canadian politician. He was a Progressive Conservative member of the House of Commons of Canada who represented the riding of York West from 1940-1954. He died in a plane crash in 1954. Biography Adamson was born in Toronto, Ontario, in 1901. He was the son of Agar Adamson, who commanded Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry from 1916 to 1918 during World War I. His mother was Mabel Cawthra, a wealthy heiress, artist and decorator. He attended Ridley College in St. Catharines and later Magdalene College in Cambridge, England. At the age of 17, he enlisted in the Royal Air Force and served as a pilot in 1918 in the last year of World War I. He was trained as a mining engineer and worked for Brazilian Traction in South America and Ontario Hydro. Agar Stewart Allan Masterton Adamson (25 December 1865 – 21 November 1929) was a Canadian soldier who married the Toronto heiress Mabel Cawthra. He served with distinction in the Second Boer War and in World War I, and commanded the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry from 1916 to 1918. John Cawthra
John Cawthra (1789–1851) was a merchant, distiller and political figure in Upper Canada. He represented Simcoe from 1828 to 1830 in the Legislative Assembly of Upper Canada as a Reformer. He was born in England somewhere near Guiseley, the son of Joseph Cawthra and Mary Turnpenny, and came to Toronto with his father while still young. He served in the militia during the War of 1812 and in this war he helped to save the life of Lieutenant Archibald MacLean. After the battle he was offered reward money for the capture of Detroit however he did not take it. Cawthra settled in Newmarket about 1822. Cawthra died in Newmarket. A heritage marker in Newmarket marks the site of his trading post, later replaced by Cawthra House, his residence, a general store and the town's first bank.
