Jean Negulesco (born Ioan Negulescu; – 18 July 1993) was a Romanian-American film director and screenwriter.Oliver, Myrna"Jean Negulesco 1900–1993 ''The Los Angeles Times'', 22 July 1993. He first gained notice for his film noirs and later made such notable films as '' Johnny Belinda'' (1948), ''How to Marry a Millionaire'' (1953), ''Titanic'' (1953), and '' Three Coins in the Fountain'' (1954). He was called "the first real master of CinemaScope". Biography Early life Born in Craiova, Negulesco was the son of a hotel keeper and attended Carol I High School. When he was 15, he was working in a military hospital during World War I. Georges Enesco, the Romanian composer, came to play the violin to the war wounded; Negulesco drew a portrait of him, and Enesco bought it. Gordon Hollingshead (January 8, 1892 in Garfield, New Jersey – July 8, 1952 in Balboa Island, California) was an American film producer, associate producer and assistant director. Career Hollingshead began his career as an assistant director, with his first work being the 1916 film ''The Shrine Girl'', in which he also had an acting role. Through the silent film era, Hollingshead assisted in the direction of thirteen films, and continued as an assistant director until 1934. He joined Warner Bros. in 1921, where he remained until his death. He produced his first film, ''Morocco Nights'', in 1934. This started him on the path of producing, which would lead to enormous success. From 1934 to 1953, Hollingshead produced 174 films and film shorts. He received sixteen Oscar nominations, and won six Oscars, including for the short film '' Star in the Night'' (1945). The Academy Award for Best Live Action Short Film is an award presented at the annual Academy Awards ceremony. The award has existed, under various names, since 1957. From 1936 until 1956 there were two separate awards, "Best Short Subject, One-reel" and "Best Short Subject, Two-reel", referring to the running time of the short: a standard Reel#Motion picture terminology, reel of film is 1000 feet, or about 11 minutes of run time. A third category "Best Short Subject, color" was used only for 1936 and 1937. From the initiation of short subject awards for 1932 until 1935 the terms were "Best Short Subject, comedy" and "Best Short Subject, novelty". These categories were merged starting with the 1957 awards, under the name "Short Subjects, Live Action Subjects", which was used until 1970. The 16th Academy Awards were held on March 2, 1944, to honor the films of 1943. This was the first Oscar ceremony held at a large public venue, Grauman's Chinese Theatre. The ceremony was broadcast locally on KFWB, and internationally by CBS Radio via shortwave. Jack Benny hosted the event, which lasted less than 30 minutes. For the first time, winners for Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress were awarded full-size statuettes, instead of smaller-sized awards mounted on a plaque.
