Catrine, Sorn And Mauchline East (ward)
Catrine, Sorn and Mauchline East was one of 32 electoral wards of East Ayrshire Council. The ward was created in 1999 and elected one councillor using the first-past-the-post voting electoral system. The ward was a Labour stronghold as the party successfully held the seat at every election. George Smith was the only councillor elected as he represented the ward from 1999 to 2007. In 2007, the ward was abolished and replaced by the multi-member Ballochmyle ward as council elections moved to a proportional voting system – the single transferable vote – following the implementation of the Local Governance (Scotland) Act 2004. Catrine, Sorn and North Auchinleck was one of 30 electoral wards of East Ayrshire Council. Originally created in 1984, the ward was initially within Cumnock and Doon Valley District Council before the local government reforms in the 1990s. The ward elected one councillor using the first-past-the-post voting electoral system. The ward was a Labour stronghold as the party successfully held the seat at every election. In 1999, the ward was abolished with the area represented by the ward placed into the new Catrine, Sorn and Mauchline East ward and the re-established Auchinleck ward. Boundaries The Catrine, Sorn and North Auchinleck ward was created for the 1984 local elections by the Initial Statutory Reviews of Electoral Arrangements in 1981 from part of the former Catrine and Sorn and Auchinleck wards. Single Transferable Vote
Single transferable vote (STV) is a multi-winner electoral system in which voters cast a single vote in the form of a ranked-choice ballot. Voters have the option to rank candidates, and their vote may be transferred according to alternate preferences if their preferred candidate is eliminated, so that their vote is used to elect someone they prefer over others in the running. A76 Road
The A76 is a major trunk road in south west Scotland. Sorn, East Ayrshire
Sorn ( gd, Sorn, meaning a kiln) is a small village in East Ayrshire, Scotland. It is situated on the River Ayr. It has a population of roughly 350. Its neighbouring village is Catrine. Sorn Castle lies just outside the village. History Sorn was a parish in Ayrshire. One gazetteer states "It is bounded on the north by Galston; on the east by Muirkirk; on the south by Auchinleck; and on the west by Mauchline." Another states that Sorn did not exist until 1658 when it was disjoined from the parish of Mauchline. Sorn has a Covenanter history. Sorn today Local services include: a pub, a cafe, a church, a general store (closed 2019), a motorbike shop and a television shop. There is also a village hall and a bowling green and primary school. Catrine is a village in East Ayrshire, Scotland which was formerly a centre of cotton manufacture. It has a population of around () Geography The village lies on the River Ayr which previously provided water power for local industry. It is in the parish of Sorn, south east of Mauchline. Transport The A76 road lies south west of Catrine. A railway branch line to Catrine (Glasgow & South Western Railway) was one of the last to be built in Scotland in the 20th century. Catrine's station opened in 1903.
