Catholic Young Men's National Union
The Catholic Young Men's National Union was a Roman Catholic voluntary organisation set up in the United States in 1875. Its object was the intellectual, moral, and physical advancement of Catholic youth. History The association was organized on February 22 1875, at a meeting held in Newark, New Jersey, at the call of George H. Doane, who became its first president. It included about one hundred organizations, extending as far west as Mankato, Minnesota. Its aims included the establishment and promotion of Catholic young men's associations, libraries, reading-rooms, and gymnasiums; and the maintenance and conduct of an athletic league. Initially, delegates met for an annual congress. In 1878 the National Union inaugurated a successful movement for obtaining appointments of a greater number of Catholic chaplains to the army and navy. The Catholic Summer School of America originated at the end of the nineteenth century. A Catholic summer school is an assembly of Roman Catholics, both clergy and laity, held during the summer months. It aims to foster intellectual culture in harmony with Christian faith by means of lectures and special courses along university extension lines. History It first took form in the Champlain Summer School which was founded at New London, Connecticut, 1892, and located more permanently in 1893 at Cliff Haven, New York. Of those who attended, reaching 10,000 annually, 75% were women. Bishop Henry Gabriels, of Ogdensburg, NY, former Rector of the Seminary of Troy, NY, was responsible for the growth and development of the Catholic Summer School at Cliff Haven near Plattsburgh, which was a strong influence in Catholic education for many years. The Catholic Church in the United States began in the colonial era, but by the mid-1800's, most of the Spanish, French, and Mexican influences had institutionally and demographically faded, owing to the Louisiana Purchase (1803) and the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo (1848). The former territories of France, Spain, Mexico and the domains of the Native Peoples at the time were then opened up to East Coast, Southern and mid-Western Americans, primarily Protestant, migrating westward. During this same period, the Catholic Church in the East and mid-West grew through immigration overseas, especially from Europe (Germany and Ireland at first, and in 1890-1914 from Italy, Poland and Eastern Europe.)
