Catherine The Last
''Catherine the Last'' (German: ''Katharina, die Letzte'') is a 1936 Austrian romantic comedy film directed by Henry Koster and starring Franciska Gaal, Hans Holt and Hans Olden.Bock & Bergfelder p.257 It was made by the Austrian subsidiary of Universal Pictures. The film's sets were designed by the art director Erwin Scharf. After making the film Koster moved to Hollywood. In 1938 the film was remade in America as ''The Girl Downstairs'' with Gaal reprising her role. Synopsis After Hans is frustrated in his attempts to see his girlfriend Sybill by her overprotective business tycoon father, he attempts to gain entry into the house by romancing the family's kitchen maid. While at first he simply uses her as a ruse, he eventually falls in love with her instead. Henry Koster
Henry Koster (born Hermann Kosterlitz, May 1, 1905 – September 21, 1988) was a German-born film director. He was the husband of actress Peggy Moran. Early life Koster was born to Jewish parents in Berlin, Germany. He was introduced to cinema about 1910 when his uncle opened a movie theater in Berlin. Koster's mother played the piano to accompany the films, leaving the young boy to occupy himself by watching the films. After working initially as a short story writer, Kosterlitz was hired by a Berlin movie company as scenarist, becoming an assistant to director Curtis Bernhardt. Bernhardt became sick one day and asked Kosterlitz to take over as director. Career In 1932, Koster directed his first film in Berlin, the comedy '' Thea Roland''. Erwin Scharf (art Director)
Erwin Scharf (1901–1972) was an Austrian art director. He worked in the German film industry during the Weimar Era, often collaborating with Robert Neppach on set designs. Because of his Jewish heritage he left Germany following the Nazi takeover in 1933, and spent the next five years working in a variety of European countries. This included the 1937 Carol Reed-directed film '' Who's Your Lady Friend?'' in Britain.Evans p.173 In 1938 he settled in the United States. The Comedian Harmonists were an internationally famous, all-male German close harmony ensemble that performed between 1928 and 1934 as one of the most successful musical groups in Europe before World War II. The group consisted of Harry Frommermann ( tenor buffo), Asparuh "Ari" Leschnikoff (first tenor), Erich Collin (second tenor), Roman Cycowski (baritone), Robert Biberti (bass), and Erwin Bootz (pianist). Ernő Verebes (born Ernst Weiss, December 6, 1902 – June 13, 1971) was a Hungarian-American actor who began his career in Hungarian silent films in 1915. During his film career he worked and lived in Hungary, Germany and in the United States. He was born into a Hungarian emigrant family in New York, but his family later returned to Austria-Hungary.
