Nicolás Salmerón Y Alonso
Nicolás Salmerón Alonso (10 April 1838 – 21 September 1908) was a Spanish politician, president of the First Spanish Republic. Biography He was born at Alhama la Seca in the province of AlmerÃa, was educated at Granada and became assistant professor of literature and philosophy at Madrid. The last years of the reign of Isabella II were times of growing discontent with her government and with the monarchy. Salmerón joined a small party who advocated for the establishment of a republic. He was director of the opposition paper ''La Discusión'', and co-operated with Emilio Castelar on ''La Democracia''. In 1865 he was named one of the members of the directing committee of the Republican Party. In 1867 he was imprisoned with other suspects. When the revolution of September 1868 broke out, he was at AlmerÃa recovering from a serious illness. Enric Prat De La Riba
Enric Prat de la Riba i Sarrà (; 29 November 1870 – 1 August 1917) was a Catalan politician, lawyer and writer. He was a member of the , where one of the earliest definitions of Catalan nationalism was formulated. He became the first President of the Commonwealth of Catalonia on 6 April 1914 and retained this office until his death. He wrote the book and political manifesto '' La nacionalitat catalana'' in which greater autonomy to Catalonia was advocated. He died in 1917 and is interred in the Montjuïc Cemetery in Barcelona. The ''¡Cu-Cut!'' incident, also known as La Cuartelada, was an assault conducted by Spanish officers on the Catalan satirical magazine ''¡Cu-Cut!'' offices in Barcelona on November 25, 1905 in response to the publication of a satirical cartoon mocking the Spanish military.
