Casével Mother Church
Casével is a former Freguesia (Portugal), civil parish in the municipality of Castro Verde, Portugal. In 2013, the parish merged into the new parish Castro Verde e Casével. It is located 10 kilometres north-west of the municipal seat. It was considered the civil parish with the smallest population (365 inhabitants in 2001) in the municipality, covering an area of approximately 33.3 km². History The town received its Charter by order of King Manuel I of Portugal on the 20 September 1510 and was the municipal seat until 1836, when it was incorporated into the municipality of Messejana (the seat of the former Order of Santiago, Knights of Santiago). Casével's only church, to the invocation of Saint John the Baptist, São João Baptista dates back to the 14th century, and was repaired several times, including in 1533 and again in 1940-1950 after it had been abandoned. It is a territorial designation which is the lowest tier of local government below districts and counties, or their combined form, the unitary authority. Civil parishes can trace their origin to the ancient system of ecclesiastical parishes, which historically played a role in both secular and religious administration. Order Of Santiago
The Order of Santiago (; es, Orden de Santiago ), is a religious and military order founded in the 12th century. It owes its name to the Patron Saint of Spain, "Santiago" ( St. James the Greater). Its initial objective was to protect the pilgrims on the Way of St. James, to defend Christendom and to remove the Muslim Moors from the Iberian Peninsula. Entrance was not however restricted to nobility of Spain exclusively, and many members have been prominent Catholic Europeans in general. Messejana (Aljustrel)
Messejana is a Portuguese parish in the municipality of Aljustrel, in the Portuguese district of Beja. It has an area of 113.77 km2 and in the 2021 census had 811 inhabitants. History The name originated from the Arabic word ''masjana'', which means prison. The date of the town's foundation is unknown. Retaken from the Moors by Dom Sancho II in 1235, it received the status of municipality from Dom Dinis but this status was nullified on 24 October 1855. Dom Dinis restored his castle in 1288 and donated the town to the Military Order of Saint James of the Sword. Messejana received a foral or town charter from D. Manuel I on 1 July 1512. Dom João III donated the town to Dom João da Silva. He was succeeded by his grandson Dom Lourenço da Silva, who built the convent for Franciscan friars and the Church of Misericórdia between 1566 and 1570. Aljustrel () is a town and a municipality in the Portuguese district of Beja. The population in 2011 was 9,257, in an area of 458.47 km2. The present mayor is Nelson Domingos Brito, elected by the Socialist Party. The municipal holiday is June 13. History During the Roman era, Aljustrel was known as ''Metallum Vispascense''. It was occupied by the Moors but in 1235 the town was conquered from them by King D. Sancho II. The first foral (''charter'') was only conceded by King Sancho in 1252. Castro Verde () is a town and a municipality of the Alentejo region of Portugal (in the historic district of Beja). The population in 2011 was 7,276, in an area of 569.44 km2.
